Why does my chest hurt when I cough and take a deep breath?

The chest is where many organs in the human body are gathered, and many people are worried when any problems arise. The basis of treating diseases is to have a good understanding of the condition of your own body and to know the cause of the disease. At the same time, you can also find out in time whether the disease is caused by diet or lifestyle habits, so as to eliminate the impact of the disease on the body in time. So, what is the reason for chest pain when coughing and breathing deeply?

Pain on the right side of the chest when taking a deep breath is most likely caused by pleurisy. The main clinical manifestations of pleurisy are chest pain, cough, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and even difficulty breathing. When infectious pleurisy or pleural effusion is secondary to infection, there may be chills and fever. Mild cases may be asymptomatic. Pleurisy caused by different etiologies may be accompanied by clinical manifestations of the corresponding diseases.

If pleurisy is diagnosed, the treatment options are as follows:

1. Antibiotics

Anti-tuberculosis drug therapy is suitable for the treatment of tuberculous (dry or exudative) pleurisy. Isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol, and streptomycin are used alternately, with a total course of treatment of 6 to 9 months. Non-tuberculous pleurisy should be treated with appropriate drugs based on the primary disease (such as infection, tumor, etc.). Patients with purulent pleurisy or tuberculous empyema with infection are treated with penicillin.

2. Relieve pain

Take aspirin, indomethacin, or codeine by mouth.

3. Thoracentesis

It is suitable for patients with exudative pleurisy with large amounts of pleural effusion, obvious breathing difficulties or effusion that is not absorbed after long-term treatment. The amount of fluid drawn each time should not exceed 1000 ml, 2 to 3 times a week.

4. Hormone therapy

Used in combination with anti-tuberculosis drugs, it has a positive therapeutic effect on eliminating systemic toxic symptoms, promoting absorption of effusion, and preventing pleural thickening and adhesion. Prednisone can be taken orally. When systemic symptoms improve and the effusion is significantly absorbed, the dosage can be gradually reduced and the medication should be used for 4 to 6 weeks.

The following are some measures to prevent pleurisy:

1. Live a regular life, that is, rationalize and regularize your lifestyle, be careful in your daily life, avoid wind and cold, quit smoking and drinking, stay away from sex, and maintain a proper balance between work and rest.

2. Eat in moderation, eat nutritiously, and avoid spicy food.

3. Breathe fresh air frequently.

4. Stay optimistic, because bad emotions can affect the body's resistance.

5. Participate in sports regularly, exercise and improve your physical fitness.

6. Since infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the direct cause of the disease, contact with patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, especially those with active pulmonary tuberculosis, should be minimized.

The above is an introduction to the question of why chest pain occurs when coughing and breathing deeply. In fact, for this situation, we have only explained that one of the reasons is pleurisy. If you want to know what is going on, you need to go to the hospital for relevant examinations. This will also help you determine whether your body is healthy and avoid harm caused by the disease.
