Purine content list

Purine content list

For people with gout, the onset period is simply an unbearable torture. Many patients are unable to work during the onset period due to pain in their joints. An effective way to reduce the incidence of gout is to eat less food containing high purine content as much as possible, because high purine content can cause excessive uric acid in the body, leading to gout attacks. Many patients are familiar with the list of purine content in food. In fact, there are other methods that can effectively reduce the number of attacks.

1. Purine: It’s as simple as stopping the pain of gout

The essence of gout is a disease caused by abnormal purine metabolism leading to increased blood uric acid.

Purine is produced during human metabolism and is also ingested from food. Uric acid is produced after purine metabolism. Normally, uric acid is excreted in urine by the kidneys. However, if there is too much purine, more uric acid will be produced. If there is too much uric acid, or the body's pathway for excreting uric acid is blocked, uric acid will accumulate in the body. When uric acid accumulates to a certain concentration, it will crystallize. When these crystals form in the joints, they cause gout. Gout usually starts in the big toe and gradually spreads to other joints. Generally speaking, gout is less common in women than in men.

The consequences of long-term gout are cruel. It may lead to chronic gouty arthritis and cause functional disorders. Uric acid nephropathy and kidney stones are even more of a threat to kidney function. Severe cases may even develop into renal failure and uremia.

Even without gout, patients with hyperuricemia are nearly 20 times more likely to develop urinary stones than the general population, and about 20% to 40% of patients with hyperuricemia will also develop uric acid nephropathy.

In addition, hyperuricemia is also a risk factor for many other diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, coronary heart disease, cerebral infarction, etc. This is by no means alarmist, but it means that people with high uric acid levels must be vigilant and not take it lightly.

2. What you need to know about the purine content of food

Although more than two-thirds of the uric acid in the human body is endogenous uric acid, food sources are only a small part. However, it is not easy for people to change the purine produced by the body's metabolism, but they can avoid high-purine foods to reduce the production of uric acid.

"Purine" is an organic compound, a colorless crystal. Purine is oxidized into uric acid in the human body. Seafood and animal meat have relatively high purine content. These foods with high purine content are called high-purine foods. Foods that contain 100-1000 mg of purine per 100 grams of food are high-purine foods.

3. In addition to reducing food purine intake, you can also do this

1. Drink less alcohol

For gout patients, although high-alcohol liquor generally contains lower purine content, beer is indeed a forbidden area for high-risk groups.

2. Increase your total daily water intake

It is best to drink small amounts multiple times each time. Don't wait until you are thirsty to drink water. This is mainly to promote the excretion of uric acid. Note: Drink pure water, not soft drinks, coffee or other beverages. Drink less water before going to bed to avoid increasing the burden on your kidneys.

3. Keep exercising moderately

Exercise can also promote uric acid excretion and prevent another risk factor for gout and hyperuricemia: obesity.
