What causes purple tongue coating? Detailed explanation of common factors

A purple tongue can be mainly divided into two types: congestion tongue and cyanotic tongue. Both types are caused by diseases. No matter which one occurs, everyone should actively seek treatment for their own health.

1. What causes the tongue to turn purple?

There are two types of purple tongue: congestion tongue and cyanotic tongue.

1. Congestion tongue: There are scattered purple-black bruises or spots on the tip or edge of the tongue. This phenomenon indicates that there is "blood stasis" in the body. People with blood stasis have slower blood flow in their bodies, and in some parts of the body, blood flow may even stagnate completely. When people eat, they may accidentally bite the edge and tip of their tongue; when people are sick, the fragility of their blood vessels increases, and sometimes they may unknowingly break the blood vessels on their tongue. The tongue is more sensitive and tends to bleed more easily than other parts of the body, making it easy for petechiae or ecchymosis to appear on the tongue. Petechiae and ecchymoses on the tongue are also common in young women. Most of them have irregular menstruation, dark menstrual blood, often blood clots, dysmenorrhea and other symptoms. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that this is a manifestation of blood stasis. The use of drugs that regulate menstruation and promote blood circulation can unblock the microcirculation of the tongue and restore blood flow to normal. Not only can menstrual disorders and dysmenorrhea be cured, but the petechiae and ecchymosis on the tongue will also disappear. Many cancer patients have petechiae and ecchymosis on their tongue, sometimes accompanied by cyanosis. According to statistics, about 50% of patients with malignant tumors have purple tongues, and about 20% have petechiae and ecchymosis. If petechiae and ecchymosis suddenly appear on the tongue, a detailed examination should be carried out and attention should be paid!

2. Cyanotic tongue: There are two types of cyanotic tongue: the entire tongue is cyanotic and the partial tongue is cyanotic. The so-called cyanosis of the tongue refers to the cyan or purple color evenly distributed on the entire tongue, or the cyanosis appearing in the crimson (purple with cyan), or the cyanosis mixed in the light red (more cyan than purple). The so-called partial cyanosis appears on the left or right side of the tongue, or on both sides. There are one or two longitudinal cyanotic bands along the edge of the tongue and the central groove of the tongue; or there are only cyanotic spots and plaques, while no cyanosis is seen on other parts of the tongue.

2. What are the abnormal colors of the tongue?

1. The tongue is black. This is mainly due to the proliferation and darkening of the filiform papillae of the tongue. There are different shades of brown, gray, charred, and even pitch black. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that if a patient has this kind of tongue coating, the illness must be of a long duration and the disease is complex and serious.

2. A white tongue often indicates a cold. A thin and slippery tongue is mostly caused by exogenous wind-cold, while a thick, white and slippery tongue is mostly caused by cold-dampness or cold phlegm.

3. If the tongue is brown, it means intestinal obstruction.

4. A yellow tongue is often seen in the course of febrile diseases, indicating that the struggle between evil and righteousness is very fierce, the disease has entered the interior, and the evil has turned into heat.

3. Judging your physical condition from your tongue

1. Tongue tremor: Stick out your tongue in front of the mirror. If your tongue trembles slightly, it may be a sign of mental tension and physical decline. More than 70% of people will not realize the vibration in the early stage, and by the time they find it, it is often too late. It is recommended that you adjust your work and rest schedule as soon as possible, do not stay up late, and eat a healthy diet, otherwise you will soon face the risk of neurasthenia!

2. Purple tongue: When the blood contains a large amount of waste and the body is insufficiently supplied with water, the oxygen-deficient blood and oxygen-containing blood will mix together, causing the blood vessels to turn purple. If in addition to the purple tongue, you also feel stiff shoulders and back pain, it only means that there are too many toxins deposited in your body! You might as well stick to a light diet for a week, take a sauna, and maintain regular, light aerobic exercise, and the toxins will be excreted quickly.
