What is the cause of nasal vestibulitis

What is the cause of nasal vestibulitis

Vestibulitis is mainly caused by frequent irritation of the vestibule skin by nasal secretions, especially purulent secretions. Patients may experience diffuse redness, swelling, chapped or eroded skin in the vestibule and at the junction of the nasal cavity and the upper lip.

1. Cause

Vestibulitis is caused by frequent irritation of the nasal vestibule skin by nasal secretions, especially purulent secretions. Any acute or chronic, specific or nonspecific inflammation in the nasal cavity, nasal foreign bodies, tumors, etc. can be complicated by vestibulitis. Long-term stimulation from harmful dust (such as tobacco, fur, cement, asbestos, etc.), nose picking or friction that causes damage to the nasal vestibule skin and secondary infection are also one of the causes of this disease.

2. Clinical manifestations

Acute vestibulitis is characterized by pain in the nasal vestibule. Examination reveals diffuse redness and swelling of the skin inside the nasal vestibule and at the junction of the nasal vestibule and the upper lip, or cracks and superficial erosions, and sticky pus attached to the nasal hairs. Chronic vestibulitis is manifested by fever, dryness, itching and tenderness in the nasal vestibule. Examination shows sparse nasal hair in the nasal vestibule, local skin thickening and scab formation. Small bleeding wounds may be found after the scabs are removed.

3. Treatment

1. Eliminate irritating secretions in the nasal cavity, avoid the stimulation of harmful dust, and correct bad nose-picking habits.

2. Acute cases can be treated with antibiotics to help subside inflammation.

3. For chronic cases, 3% hydrogen peroxide can be used for cleaning and 1% to 2% mercuric acid ointment or antibiotic ointment can be applied topically.
