What is the difference between dill and fennel

Dill has another name called wild fennel, so many people think that dill and fennel are the same. In fact, the difference between dill and fennel is very obvious. For example, in terms of shape and taste, there are obvious differences between the two. For example, the taste of dill has a very obvious spicy flavor.

1. Dill

Dill is the first traditional European spice plant on this year's table species calendar. If you love Western cuisine, it may not be too unfamiliar to you. This plant frequently appears in soups and sauces, usually accompanied by cream and cheese, adding a flavor to the dishes that does not overpower the original flavor but enhances the aroma. Dill is native to Western Asia (as you turn more pages of the calendar, you will find that many spices and crops are native to this place), and later spread to the Mediterranean region and even throughout Europe and India. It is now an important spice that is indispensable in traditional European and Indian cuisine.

2. Shape difference

Fennel and dill are very similar, so similar that there is basically no way to tell them apart, from their leaves to their flowers. If you want to distinguish the two from the appearance, you can only wait until the seeds are fully mature and dry. Then we can see that the achenes of fennel have only five unclear main ridges, while the achenes of dill have two wing-like lateral ridges in addition to the main ridges, and have one more edge than fennel.

3. Taste Difference

Fennel and dill have slightly different flavors. I believe everyone has smelled fennel, and the smell of fennel seeds is stronger than that of the plant, similar to the star anise that appeared in the calendar two days ago. Therefore, star anise is also called "star anise" and "big anise". In order to distinguish it from "big anise", fennel seeds are generally called "small fennel". The flavor of dill is different. In the introduction, it is usually said that "the plant looks similar to fennel, but fennel smells sweeter, while dill has a more obvious spicy flavor."
