What disease causes sunken eyes?

If your eyes are sunken, you should be careful to find out whether it is caused by some diseases, such as small eyeballs, sympathetic nerve paralysis, and some trauma that may cause orbital fractures, all of which may cause symptoms of sunken eyes.

1. Small eyeball: such as congenital microphthalmia and acquired eye atrophy.

2. Sympathetic nerve paralysis: The orbital Miller muscle and orbital smooth muscle relax and paralyze, resulting in slight ptosis of the upper eyelid, narrowing of the palpebral fissure, and enophthalmos. Due to paralysis of the pupillary muscle, the sleep aperture shrinks. These three symptoms are called Horrer syndrome.

3. Disappearance of orbital fat: This often occurs in the elderly after a serious illness when progressive hemi-lateral atrophy and progressive fat disappearance occurs, or after an orbital tumor is removed or bleeding is absorbed.

4. Trauma: It is mostly caused by orbital floor fracture, which enlarges the orbital cavity, or part of the contents enter the maxillary sinus, thus causing acute traumatic enophthalmos. In addition, even if no bone trauma is caused, chronic traumatic enophthalmos may occur due to the organization and contraction of the retrobulbar tissue.

5. Excessive contraction of the rectus muscle: It occurs after strabismus surgery, due to excessive shortening of a certain muscle, enophthalmos occurs, or due to orbital periostitis, some fluid and eye muscles and fascia cause paralytic contraction and enophthalmos occurs.
