How do dark spots on lips form

Sometimes people suddenly find black spots on their lips, which not only affects the overall appearance, but it is also very likely caused by a skin disease or even some other diseases. Therefore, for black spots on the lips, people need to pay special attention to understand how they are formed so that they can prevent and treat them.

The appearance of black spots on the lips is mainly caused by abnormal melanin deposition. There are two most common diseases for this abnormal melanin deposition. One is mucosal melanoma, which refers to abnormal melanin deposition that is not related to racial pigmentation or pigmentation caused by systemic disease syndrome. The other disease is pigmented intestinal polyposis syndrome.

Mucosal black spots generally have no symptoms and are most common on the lower lip. The black spots do not protrude above the mucosal surface and have clear boundaries around them. They are often in the form of uniform flakes or small clumps. The general diameter is about 5mm. The color of dark spots varies depending on race, individual, the amount of melanin, and where the melanin is located. The closer the melanin is to the epidermis in the epithelium, the darker the color. These spots are currently considered to be benign lesions and do not require treatment, but they should be carefully observed. If there are changes in color, size, or even symptoms such as ulcers and bleeding, they should be surgically removed to avoid malignant changes.

Pigmented intestinal polyposis syndrome is an autosomal genetic disease that is inherited in families. In addition to the red lips, pigmentation can also appear on the skin around the mouth, cheek mucosa, palms, soles, fingers and toes, eyelids, nose, etc. It is usually visible a few months after birth and becomes more obvious with age. In addition to pigmentation, this disease also causes multiple intestinal polyps. Some patients may also experience symptoms such as periodic abdominal pain, diarrhea, and bloody stools. Severe cases may even lead to complications such as intestinal obstruction and intussusception. Pigmentation on the skin generally does not become malignant, but it affects the appearance and there is currently no effective treatment. Intestinal polyps should be treated actively to avoid more serious complications or even malignant transformation.
