Will vitreous opacity cause blindness? Early detection and treatment are needed

Many people know very little about vitreous opacities, and don’t even realize that it is an eye disease. In fact, the accurate definition of vitreous opacities is a secondary reaction disease of the vitreous caused by degenerative diseases or near-vitreous tissue diseases. It can cause various eye discomforts, cause great damage to the patient’s vision, and in severe cases may even lead to blindness.

Causes of vitreous opacities

Embryonic cells or tissues congenitally remaining in the vitreous, bleeding in the retina or uveal tract invading the vitreous, bleeding or exudates invading the vitreous due to hypertension, diabetes, and uveitis, and vitreous degeneration in the elderly with high myopia can all lead to vitreous liquefaction and turbidity. Other causes of vitreous opacities include eye trauma, prolonged retention of foreign objects in the eye, parasites or tumors.

Will vitreous opacity cause blindness?

If early vitreous opacities are not diagnosed and treated in time, they will develop into severe vitreous opacities. At this time, light cannot enter the eye, which may cause blindness. The following are the causes of blindness:

1. Vitreous opacity destroys the vitreous gel state and fiber support structure. The liquefied vitreous weakens the support of the retina and is one of the factors that cause retinal detachment.

2. Since the absorption process of vitreous hemorrhage is very slow, the toxic stimulation of blood decomposition products on the retina and the deposition of hemoglobin induce the formation of new blood vessels in the retina. The contraction and traction of the organized cables can tear off the retina and cause retinal detachment.

3. Massive bleeding can increase the volume of the vitreous body, causing increased intraocular pressure; it can induce the growth of new blood vessels in the iris, causing secondary glaucoma.

4. Any cause of retinal or uveal blood vessel rupture or bleeding of new blood vessels may cause vitreous hemorrhage. When there is a small amount of bleeding, the patient may experience floaters. If the disease irritates the retina before bleeding, there may be a sense of flashes. If the amount of bleeding is large, black spots and red vision may appear. Heavy bleeding can seriously affect vision and even cause loss of light perception.
