What is cranioplasty?

If an accident occurs in life and causes skull injury, timely treatment is required. Cranioplasty is the repair of skull defects. Cranioplasty is performed based on the patient's condition and is not necessary for every patient.

In open craniocerebral injuries, especially firearm injuries, skull defects of varying degrees are often left after surgery due to the need for debridement. In closed injuries, decompressive craniectomy is often necessary due to severe brain swelling. A large skull defect was left after the operation. Bone defects with a diameter of less than 3 cm usually do not cause discomfort and generally do not require cranioplasty. However, those with a diameter of more than 3 cm are suitable for cranioplasty.

Indications

Cranioplasty is used for:

1. The diameter of bone defect is more than 3cm, which affects the protection of brain.

2. There are severe subjective symptoms. Such as dizziness and headache, and the symptoms worsen when the head position changes.

3. Having serious mental burden, such as fear of noise, fear of vibration, fear of trauma, etc.

4. Large bone defects that affect appearance.

5. Those with epileptic foci in the defect area.
