What is the difference between neurosis and psychosis

For many people, there seems to be no difference between neurosis and mental illness, and neurosis is mental illness. But these two are completely different diseases. Mental illness is a mental disease, while neurosis refers specifically to a physical disease produced by the nervous system in the brain. One is a mental disorder and the other is a physical disorder. There is an essential difference between them.

The difference between neurosis and psychosis

Neurology refers to diseases of the nervous system. Common diseases include cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral infarction, poliomyelitis, cerebral palsy, peripheral neuritis, Parkinson's disease, brain trauma, epilepsy, facial paralysis, etc. These diseases are caused by various reasons that lead to organic damage to the nervous system tissues such as the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves, resulting in nervous system dysfunction. Common diseases include cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral infarction, poliomyelitis

The main symptoms are numbness, limb paralysis, convulsions, limb movement disorders, impaired consciousness, etc. General thinking ability and judgment are normal. Physical examination may reveal localized neurologic signs, which are abnormalities of the sensory, motor, or other functions of the area controlled by the nerve. The cause of this type of disease can be determined through CT, electromyography, electroencephalography, cerebral blood flow mapping, laboratory tests and other tests.

The mental manifestations are persistent and obvious abnormalities in cognitive, emotional, and volitional thinking, actions, and behavioral psychological activities; the patient cannot study, work, or live normally; the actions are difficult to understand, bizarre, and vivid; under the control of a morbid psychology, the patient may commit suicide or attack or harm others; and the patient has varying degrees of self-awareness defects. Except for a few people with secondary organic diseases, most patients cannot find a clear cause and can only be diagnosed based on symptoms.

The treatment of neurosis is mainly based on psychotherapy, supplemented by drug therapy. Psychotherapy must be carried out by professionally trained people, just as giving medicine to relatives or friends or to oneself by laymen on their own initiative cannot be properly called drug treatment. Praying to gods and Buddhas may have a good psychological effect on patients, but it cannot be said to be a form of psychotherapy.

Common mental illnesses include

Schizophrenia, manic-depressive psychosis, menopausal psychosis, paranoid psychosis and mental illness associated with various organic diseases, etc. Patients and their families should actively cooperate with psychiatrists and go to the hospital for treatment as soon as possible.
