What are the symptoms of acute allergic conjunctivitis

What are the symptoms of acute allergic conjunctivitis

The importance of eyes is beyond words, but they are also very fragile. If we are not careful, we may develop eye diseases, which will damage our eye health. In addition to learning how to prevent eye diseases, we also need to understand the symptoms of some common eye diseases in order to achieve early detection and treatment. Acute allergic conjunctivitis is very common.

Acute allergic conjunctivitis is divided into seasonal and perennial acute allergic conjunctivitis, which accounts for about 50% of allergic eye diseases and is more common in adults. The main symptoms are sudden and unbearable itching, tearing, redness and swelling of the eyes. In severe cases, there are burning sensations, conjunctival edema and other discomforts. These symptoms may come and go during the allergy season, with recurring symptoms; or they may be relatively mild but occur year-round. In addition to eye discomfort, some patients also suffer from allergic rhinitis, asthma, etc.

There are many allergens that cause allergies, mainly pollen, dust mites, animal hair, etc., followed by perfumes, cosmetics, contact lenses and their care solutions that come into contact with the eyes on a daily basis, and even medicines or foods such as seafood and mangoes may cause allergies.

The ideal treatment for acute allergic conjunctivitis is of course to target the allergen, but in most clinical cases the allergen cannot be found in time. When you suffer from this disease, you should go to a regular ophthalmology hospital for treatment in time, use artificial tears to apply local eye drops, or use flushing to significantly reduce the concentration of allergens and inflammatory factors and improve symptoms. At the same time, you can apply local cold compress or ice compress to the eyes to relieve discomfort.

If you find your eyes itchy, red and swollen, and you cannot go to a regular hospital for treatment in time, you can take the following measures to relieve it:

1. When your eyes are extremely itchy, cold compress (ice compress) is also a good way to temporarily relieve the itching: apply a cold towel or gauze to both eyes for 15-20 minutes each time, 3-4 times a day.

2. For symptoms such as itching, redness, and edema caused by acute allergic reactions, you can use sodium cromoglycate, naphthalenesulfonate, pranoprofen, azelastine eye drops, etc. If the symptoms are not relieved after treatment, and the eyes are red and itchy, you can use hormonal eye drops for a short period of time. After the condition stabilizes, you can switch to milder antihistamines to consolidate the treatment.

3. You can also use oral anti-allergic drugs such as chlorpheniramine and Claritin. If combined with bacterial infection of the eye, tobramycin, ofloxacin and other eye drops can be added topically.
