Can adult amblyopia be treated?

Adult amblyopia can certainly be treated, but the effect of treatment is not very good. Because amblyopia is mostly congenital, it has basically been established by the time it reaches adulthood and the treatment effect is no longer obvious, so it is better to treat it as early as possible.

1. With the development of science and the continuous deepening of research, adult amblyopia is judged to be just a kind of "sleeping visual cells" and can be cured by awakening the "sleeping" visual cells. A research result published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America confirmed that the visual system plasticity of adult amblyopic patients is higher than that of normal people. When synaptic activity or regulation occurs between cells in the brain's nervous system, the "developmental plasticity" of the visual system is stimulated. The plasticity of the human visual system exists throughout life, and requires diverse and comprehensive treatments to be effective. The effectiveness of treatment is closely related to the patient's degree and type of amblyopia, the nature of their gaze, and compliance with treatment. Therefore, amblyopia in adults is difficult to treat, but not completely untreatable.

2. Amblyopia has different degrees of refractive error, so the refractive error must be corrected first, and corrective glasses must be worn through accurate eye examination. 4. The reason why the treatment of amblyopia in adults is not effective: We know that good vision is not acquired innately. When a baby is born, its vision is less than 1% of that of an average person. As the baby grows older, the visual cells in both eyes continue to develop and improve.

The period before 5 years old is an important period for the development of visual function. Visual development continues until 6 to 8 years old. If binocular vision is impaired for some reason during this period, the visual cells will not receive normal stimulation, the visual function will remain at a low level, and the vision of both eyes will be poor and cannot be corrected, resulting in binocular amblyopia. If only one eye can be used to see, over time the vision of the eye that is repeatedly stimulated develops, while the vision of the other eye that cannot focus develops slowly, resulting in monocular amblyopia.
