How to treat colitis, many dietary precautions

Colitis is a particularly recurrent disease that is not easy to cure and poses a great threat to the patient's health. It is important to actively treat colitis. At the same time, you must also adjust your diet. Avoid eating raw, cold, or irritating foods and eat more easily digestible, light foods.

1. Colitis patients often show symptoms of physical weakness and poor resistance, especially the gastrointestinal tract is prone to infection. Therefore, they should pay more attention to food hygiene, not eat raw, cold, hard and spoiled food, refrain from smoking, drinking and avoid using irritating condiments such as sour, spicy and choking (such as chili peppers and mustard) to avoid intestinal sensitivity and aggravation of diarrhea.

2. Patients with colitis should avoid eating foods that cause bloating. When flatulence and diarrhea are too severe, you should eat less sugar and easily fermented foods, such as potatoes, beans, milk, etc. Lactose in milk, glucose in sweets, oligosaccharides in soybeans, etc. are easily fermented in the intestines to produce acid and gas, aggravating intestinal mucosal damage and intestinal dysfunction, and exacerbating the diarrhea symptoms of colitis. It is best not to drink milk, because milk can promote gastric acid secretion, thereby aggravating and inducing digestive tract diseases.

3. Supplement minerals with caution. Minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and iron have varying degrees of stimulating effects on the gastrointestinal mucosa during the process of digestion and absorption. Therefore, in the early stages of dietary conditioning, although colitis patients suffer from multiple mineral deficiencies due to diarrhea, they should not rush to supplement them. Instead, they should arrange their intake plan step by step after a period of mucosal repair.

4. Patients with colitis should eat less raw fruits and vegetables, especially cold fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon, melon, banana, pear, cucumber, lettuce, green radish, tomato, etc. Persimmons, pomegranates, and apples all contain tannic acid and pectin, which have astringent and antidiarrheal effects and can be eaten in moderation by people with colitis. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that diarrhea is caused by a weak spleen and stomach. Cold fruits and vegetables damage spleen yang and generate dampness, making diarrhea symptoms worse. It is recommended to frequently consume therapeutic foods such as yam, coix seed, and water chestnut that can nourish the spleen and eliminate dampness.

5. Replenish body fluids in time. If colitis causes dehydration and low sodium, you should drink light salt water and vegetable leaf soup in time to replenish the loss of water, salt and vitamins. Diarrhea takes away a lot of water and electrolytes, causing a disorder in the internal environment. You must ensure 6 to 8 cups of fluid replenishment every day. You can drink mineral water, preferably freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juice, or boiled fruit and vegetable water. Do not drink purified water, tea, and sweet drinks. At the same time, the temperature of food is also very important. Do not consume food and drinks below 37°C, especially cold drinks. It is better to eat warm drinks.
