What is the reason for anal odor

If the anus smells and is accompanied by a damp feeling, then in order to effectively treat and relieve the symptoms, the patient must pay attention to whether it is caused by prolapsed internal hemorrhoids or the frail and sick elderly, resulting in relaxation of the anal sphincter. Also, if an abscess around the anal canal and rectum ruptures, this symptom may also be caused.

1. Prolapsed internal hemorrhoids. In severe cases, the hemorrhoids will not only prolapse during defecation, but will also prolapse outside the anus when coughing, tired, or walking. Due to the contraction of the anal sphincter, the prolapsed hemorrhoids will be incarcerated, edema, and increased exudate, symptoms of wet anus may occur.

2. For the elderly or weak people, the anal sphincter is relaxed or has reduced contraction force, which makes the anus loose and the intestinal mucosa secretes intestinal mucus which easily leaks out of the anus. Especially when tired, the anus becomes more moist. In view of the above situation, the contraction function of the anal sphincter should be strengthened, such as anal lifting exercises under hot water sitz bath, sphincter contraction and relaxation exercises, anal massage, acupuncture at Changqiang, Yaoshu and Huiyin points and appropriate use of Buzhong Yiqi Decoction.

3. Anal fistula is formed after rupture of anal canal and rectal abscess or incision and drainage. It is also a common cause of anal moisture due to repeated rupture, pus discharge, and inflammatory exudation.

4. The sebaceous glands and sweat glands in the anus secrete vigorously, especially in obese people. The anus is deeply sunken between the buttocks, which prevents the sweat from the skin around the anus from evaporating well, causing the anus to be often moist. Attention should be paid to the cleanliness of the anal area and keep it dry.

5. Complete rectal prolapse: Anal sphincter weakness often occurs, and the entire layer of the rectum or mucosa prolapses out of the anus. The fluid in the rectal mucosa will contaminate the skin around the anus and cause increased secretions from the anus.

6. Eczema, herpes, contact dermatitis, genital warts, and abscess rupture after skin infection on the perianal skin can all cause increased local secretions in the anus. 7. Sequelae of anal surgery, such as anal fistula or anal fissure, which cuts off or damages more external or internal sphincter muscles, resulting in decreased anal closure ability and easy overflow of rectal fluid outside the anus.
