Is it normal to have a blood sugar level of 10.5 after a meal? What does it mean?

Blood sugar level is an important health indicator of the human body. The level of blood sugar directly reflects the relationship between the human body and diabetes. People with high blood sugar levels will have higher blood sugar levels after examination. For example, some people often feel dizzy after meals. After examination, it is found that the blood sugar level after meals is as high as 10.5. So, is blood sugar level of 10.5 after meals normal? What is its significance?

1. Definition: In the early stage of type 2 diabetes, the first phase of insulin release is delayed and the amount of insulin secreted is insufficient, so blood sugar increases after a meal. However, the second phase of insulin release is mostly normal, and the peak secretion level may be slightly higher than normal, and the time is prolonged, resulting in the total amount of insulin release not decreasing, and sometimes even increasing. Therefore, fasting blood sugar in the morning is mostly normal.

2. Post-meal blood sugar standard: If the blood sugar level is between 7.8-11.1mmol/L 2 hours after a meal, it is considered pre-diabetes.

Usually, we screen for diabetes by checking fasting blood sugar. If the fasting blood sugar is normal (less than 5.6mmol/L), we think we are in a safe condition and will not develop diabetes. But in fact this is a misunderstanding. Compared with Westerners, the increase in blood sugar in Chinese people is mainly after meals. During routine physical examinations, only fasting blood sugar is checked, so many people who simply have elevated blood sugar levels after meals are able to "get away with it," resulting in a very high rate of missed diagnosis.

3. Diagnosis: Among people diagnosed with prediabetes in China , postprandial blood sugar increase is the main symptom, and the proportion of simple fasting blood sugar increase is less than 20%. If only fasting blood glucose is used to screen the population, 46.6% of diabetic patients and 70.7% of prediabetes will be missed. Therefore, the detection of blood sugar 2 hours after a meal is of great significance for the diagnosis of diabetes and prediabetes.

For most diabetic patients, postprandial blood sugar rises earlier than fasting blood sugar rises. If fasting blood sugar is found to be above the standard, it means that diabetes has progressed to a certain extent. Because when fasting blood sugar is normal, but the blood sugar level 2 hours after a meal is between 7.8-11.1mmol/L, this can be diagnosed as impaired glucose tolerance, which is prediabetes. Studies have shown that every diabetic patient goes through the pre-diabetes stage of "impaired glucose tolerance", and the risk of cardiovascular disease increases or has already occurred during this stage.
