What to do if you fall and injure your coccyx? Pay attention to these matters

Many people think that the coccyx is not an important organ and they don’t need to care about it that much. In fact, this idea is extremely wrong. Once the coccyx is injured, it can easily cause visceral dysfunction, so you must pay attention to bed rest, drink more water, and eat more vegetables rich in fiber.

1. Overview

The coccyx is triangular in shape and is formed by the union of 3 to 5 coccygeal vertebrae at the back. It is the most developed part of the spine and represents a vestigial organ of the tail. The human coccyx is generally a bone formed by the merging and degeneration of four vertebrae.

The coccyx may look insignificant on the surface, but it actually holds profound secrets. From the perspective of neuroanatomy, there is a sacral ganglion attached to the front of the coccyx. Acute and chronic injuries to the coccyx stimulate the sacral ganglion, reflexively causing visceral dysfunction. According to the meridian theory of traditional Chinese medicine, there is a point called Changqiang, which is the starting point of the Du meridian, under the end of the coccyx. The Du meridian is the sea of the Yang meridians. The source of the Du meridian is damaged and blocked, disrupting the mutual restraint between the meridians in the body. “When Yin and Yang are balanced, the spirit will be in good health.” Disharmony between Yin and Yang will lead to a myriad of diseases. Symptoms gradually appear after coccyx injury, usually including: dizziness, irritability, chest tightness, lower back pain, chronic diarrhea, dry eyes, protruding bags under the eyes, pale complexion, drowsiness at noon and inability to fall asleep, increased wrinkles on the forehead, and chloasma on the face.

2. What to do if your coccyx is injured?

1. Pay more attention when sleeping. If you lie on your back, your coccyx will be directly compressed, causing the symptoms to worsen. Therefore, you should change to lying on your side to reduce the pressure of your body weight on the coccyx.

2. When sitting on a chair or sofa, the coccyx will inevitably be under pressure. You can put an air cushion on the buttocks, or sit on a narrow bench to leave the coccyx free and avoid pressure.

3. Drink more water, eat vegetables rich in fiber, and keep bowel movements smooth to avoid constipation irritation and aggravation of symptoms.

4. When constipation occurs, you can take honey and eat some bananas to relieve constipation. In severe cases, you can use laxatives such as Ma Ren Wan, liquid paraffin, etc.

5. In the first few days, the pain symptoms are obvious. You can take indomethacin or ibuprofen for pain relief under the guidance of a doctor.
