How to treat numbness of lower limbs caused by lumbar disc herniation

Lumbar disc herniation often accompanies middle-aged and elderly people throughout their lives. It is a chronic bone disease that causes a huge blow to the patient's life. People suffering from lumbar disc herniation are often unable to engage in physical labor, and in severe cases may lose their ability to work. Numbness of the lower limbs due to lumbar disc herniation is a phenomenon that occurs when the disease develops to a certain stage. So, how to treat numbness of the lower limbs due to lumbar disc herniation?

Why does lumbar disc herniation cause leg numbness? It is because the lesion compresses the nerves. This is the reason why patients experience paralysis symptoms, and it can also be distinguished from low back pain caused by simple lumbar muscle strain. In life, some patients initially experience severe back pain, so severe that they roll around in bed. After a while, the pain in my waist went away but my legs became numb, so I thought I was getting better. This is a common misunderstanding among patients. Leg numbness means that the protrusion has begun to compress the nerves. If the nerves are compressed to death, the lower limbs will become 'numb', which actually means that the disease has worsened.

The main treatments for lumbar disc herniation are as follows:

1. Nucleus pulposus removal. The main purpose of the operation is to remove the protruding nucleus pulposus tissue and other pressure-causing objects, relieve the compression of the nerve roots, and relieve symptoms such as low back and leg pain.

2. Lumbar fusion. Lumbar fusion can be considered for patients who have concurrent or postoperative lumbar instability.

3. Interventional treatment. Suitable for younger patients, the commonly used method now is percutaneous laser disc decompression, which uses laser to vaporize part of the disc nucleus pulposus, reduce the internal pressure of the diseased disc, and relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots.

4. Drug treatment needs to be used under the guidance of a doctor. Oral nonsteroidal analgesics. For patients in the acute stage, dehydrating agents are needed to eliminate nerve root edema.
