Does myopia cause bulging eyes?

In daily life, myopia is a very rare eye disease, especially among children, the number of people with myopia is very high. Once our eyes become myopic, it will inevitably affect our life and work to a certain extent. At the same time, once you develop myopia, the degree of myopia will gradually increase. When it reaches a certain value, it will cause people's eyeballs to bulge out, causing image problems.

1. Will myopia cause bulging eyes?

Myopia refers to a refractive state in which when the eye is not using accommodation, parallel light rays are refracted through the eye's refractive system and focus falls in front of the retina. The main cause of myopia is the excessive length of the anterior-posterior axis of the eyeball (called axial myopia), followed by a strong refractive power of the eye (called refractive myopia). As the axial length of the eye increases, the myopic refractive power increases and the protrusion of the eyeball also increases.

2. What to do if myopia causes protruding eyeballs

Protrusion of the eyeball in myopia is caused by the elongation of the eye axis due to myopia, and there is currently no better treatment. However, you can improve your eyeballs by:

(1) Myopia glasses can prevent and treat exophthalmos: Since the eyes of adolescents are still in the development stage, accommodative myopia can easily develop into axial myopia. Especially in cases of severe myopia, the anterior-posterior diameter of the eyeball is significantly lengthened, which manifests itself as bulging of the eyeball. If the myopia is corrected normally by wearing glasses from the beginning, this situation will be alleviated or even prevented.

(2) Wearing hard contact lenses: can prevent recurrence of protrusion.

(3) Laser treatment for myopia: This treatment is achieved by subtly cutting the cornea and changing its curvature. In theory, this should be able to improve exophthalmos. However, since the amount of cutting is very small, only tens or hundreds of microns, there is no visible effect on the appearance of the eye.

Therefore, in daily life, once you become myopic, you should go to a regular hospital for examination as soon as possible, and then wear myopia glasses that suit you to prevent the degree from increasing due to not wearing glasses, which will cause the eyeball to bulge out.
