Symptoms of acute laryngitis, early detection and early treatment

Laryngitis in children is generally acute. Babies with acute laryngitis will have symptoms of fever, cough, and hoarseness. If the baby's condition is serious, the baby will also become restless. It is usually caused by bacterial infection. Early detection and treatment of baby laryngitis is the most critical.

1. Symptoms of laryngitis in children

1. The onset is often acute, and most children have fever, often accompanied by cough, hoarseness, etc. In the early stage, the main symptom is laryngeal spasm, and hoarseness is usually not serious. It manifests as paroxysmal barking cough or dyspnea. Then the inflammation invades the subglottic area, which becomes a "hollow" cough. The symptoms will worsen at night. The edema of the subglottic mucosa worsens, and inspiratory laryngeal stridor may occur.

2. The child's nostrils flare, and the suprasternal fossa, supraclavicular fossa, intercostal space and upper abdominal soft tissue sink when inhaling. The child also has symptoms such as irritability, flaring nostrils, cold sweats, and a rapid pulse. Some children are like normal people when they are quiet, and only experience inspiratory stridor and inspiratory dyspnea after activities. Auscultation reveals clear breath sounds and a normal heart rate. Laryngeal stridor and inspiratory dyspnea occur even at rest. Laryngeal conducted sounds or tubular breath sounds may be heard upon auscultation. The heart rate is relatively fast, reaching 120-140 beats/minute.

3. Severe patients may also experience paroxysmal irritability, cyanosis of the lips and nails, blue or paleness around the mouth, weakened or inaudible breath sounds in both lungs, dull heart sounds, and a heart rate of 140 to 160 beats per minute. The patient changes from irritability to semi-coma or coma, with temporary quietness, gray complexion, and almost disappearance of the two types of breath sounds on auscultation, with only tracheal conduction sounds, weak heart sounds, and irregular or fast or slow heartbeat.

4. Acute laryngitis in children can be caused by viral or bacterial infection, and is often secondary to upper respiratory tract infections such as the common cold, acute rhinitis, pharyngitis, or certain acute infectious diseases such as influenza, measles, whooping cough, etc.

2. Specific causes of laryngitis in children

1. Infection: This disease is often related to colds, usually with viral invasion first, followed by bacterial infection. It is often secondary to rhinitis, pharyngitis, and upper respiratory tract infection. It can be a precursor disease to acute infectious diseases such as influenza, pneumonia, measles, chickenpox, whooping cough, scarlet fever, etc.

2. Decreased resistance: more common in children under 5 years old. Because children have low resistance, narrow laryngeal cavity, abundant submucosal lymphatic tissue and loose subglottic tissue, edema is easy to occur, causing airway obstruction and inducing the disease. If not diagnosed and treated in time, it can often be life-threatening.

3. Other factors: such as stimulation from tobacco and alcohol, and catching cold can easily induce this disease. Acute laryngitis in children is the abbreviation of acute laryngitis, trachea and bronchitis. It is called "lock throat wind, acute throat syndrome" in traditional Chinese medicine. It is a common acute and severe disease in infants and young children during sudden changes in temperature or cold seasons. It is mainly characterized by hoarseness, cough like dog barking, accompanied by varying degrees of inspiratory wheezing, and worsening at night. It is prone to complications of laryngeal obstruction, pneumonia, and heart failure, and severe cases can be life-threatening.
