What are the symptoms of hepatosplenomegaly in children?

Parents need to pay attention if their children have hepatosplenomegaly, especially in daily life. They should pay attention to whether their children have similar symptoms. For example, if their children have anemia, jaundice, or symptoms of gastrointestinal bleeding, they must consider whether it is caused by hepatosplenomegaly.

1. Onset and course of disease: Acute infectious splenomegaly caused by bacteria or viruses usually has an acute onset. The duration of splenomegaly can be long or short, and most hematologic splenomegaly has a long course.

2. Anemia and jaundice: mostly hemolytic anemia. Enlarged spleen and lymph nodes are often accompanied by fever, hepatomegaly, anemia, bleeding tendency, malignant histiocytosis or late-stage malignant lymphoma, etc.

3. Accompanied by gastrointestinal bleeding: considered to be congestive splenomegaly.

4. Accompanied by pain in the liver and spleen area: Liver pain indicates intrahepatic inflammation, acute congestion or malignant tumor; pain in the spleen area is mostly splenic embolism and perisplenitis; congenital metabolic disorders often do not cause pain in the liver and spleen area. Pain in the liver and spleen area has certain diagnostic value.

6. Accompanied by fever: If splenomegaly is accompanied by fever and spontaneous pain or tenderness, it is mostly caused by infection. It is common in systemic infectious diseases such as sepsis, perisplenitis, splenic abscess, kala-azar, chronic malaria and scrub typhus. Splenomegaly accompanied by swollen lymph nodes and fever is mostly caused by viral infection, such as roseola infantum and rubella. The sick children show prominent lymphadenopathy, fever, and occasionally splenomegaly.

7. Other associated symptoms: Find out whether there are urinary tract symptoms such as urine color or hematuria, and whether there are accompanying neurological symptoms and mental retardation.
