Is laser treatment harmful to the eyes?

Many people have myopia in their daily lives. Myopia will make us see things blurry, and our eyesight is not very healthy, so everyone should make a detailed diagnosis and treatment of myopia. Laser treatment of myopia has no harm, takes less time and cost, and is very effective, so everyone can try it.

The overall success rate of laser eye surgery for myopia in my country has reached over 95%, especially for laser treatment of low to moderate myopia below 600 degrees, the satisfaction rate can reach 99.5%. But there are also reports of unsuccessful attempts. At present, the public psychology in China manifests itself in two extremes: the first is to deify the effects of surgery. Current laser surgeries are not yet perfect, especially for high-degree corrections such as over 1200 degrees, whose predictability, safety and postoperative stability are obviously insufficient. Moreover, for pathological myopia, the surgical requirement is only to improve the distance vision seen on the eye chart, but it ignores the fact that laser is only an optical correction and cannot help with existing lesions in the fundus.

Another opposing idea is to completely deny laser surgery for myopia, which is the so-called "treating the symptoms but not the root cause", but ignores another fact: for low to moderate myopia, more than ten years of practice has proved that laser surgery is effective, stable and reliable.

In addition, some patients who have undergone surgery before do need to "rework" now, but not all patients who have undergone surgery do so. There are two main reasons for "rework": First, the safety of the previous radial keratotomy (RK) is poorer than PRK, LASIK, etc. Second, it is known that not all myopic patients can use RK surgery. The pathologies of myopia vary, especially high myopia (over 600 degrees), which is divided into simple and pathological types. Simple high myopia can be treated surgically, while pathological high myopia requires strengthening the sclera before surgery. Myopia exceeding 1500 degrees should be treated with artificial lens implantation. It is inappropriate to use the same surgical method for all myopic cases in the past. In recent years, the methods and equipment of myopia laser surgery have been greatly improved, especially the emergence of corneal wavefront aberration-guided excimer laser personalized resection (ORK), which makes the laser cutting shape more in line with the optical characteristics of the cornea, with better results and fewer complications. Also, the processing capabilities of ophthalmologists have significantly improved, so the number of "reworks" of surgeries performed in recent years should become less and less.
