What is a deep bite?

First of all, deep overbite is also a type of deep overbite, which is mainly a malocclusion caused by abnormal vertical development of the maxillary and mandibular dental arches and (or) maxillary and mandibular bones. It refers to the situation where the cutting edge of the upper front teeth covers more than 1/3 of the length of the crown of the lower front teeth or the lower front teeth occlude more than 1/3 of the lingual side of the upper front teeth.

Among them, the upper central incisor is vertical or inward-tilted, the incisors on both sides are labially tilted, or the upper incisors are inward-tilted and the canines are labially tilted, or all the upper anterior teeth are inward-tilted, and the anterior teeth cover is less than 3mm, sometimes 0-1mm; or the upper and lower anterior teeth are crowded and inward-tilted, showing severe atresia, which may bite the lingual side of the upper anterior teeth or the labial side of the lower anterior teeth, causing acute or chronic periodontitis and resulting in alveolar bone absorption, loose teeth, etc. The posterior teeth are in a neutral or distal relationship, and the lower dental arch is shortened.

Finally, deep bite of teeth can be harmful to our body or oral cavity. When such a situation occurs, we must pay attention to it and go to the dental department for timely correction. The biggest harm of deep bite is damage to the temporomandibular joint, especially closed deep bite is a common malocclusion in temporomandibular joint disorder syndrome. In this group of people, the mandible is in a distal position, the condyle is moved posteriorly, and the mandibular protrusive movement is severely impaired. When temporomandibular joint disorder occurs, pain often occurs around the joint when opening the mouth and chewing. Other parts of the body, such as headaches and ear pain, may also manifest as opening the mouth with a crooked mouth, and noises and popping in the joints when opening and closing the mouth.
