What are the ingredients of desiccant

Desiccant refers to a substance that can remove moisture from wet items. It is very effective in removing moisture and keeping things dry, and it is easy to make. Therefore, it has a wide range of applications. Desiccant can be found in clothes, food, shoes, furniture, handicrafts, etc. But one thing that needs special attention is that desiccant uses chemical ingredients and is not edible. It is harmful to the human body if consumed. So let’s introduce the ingredients of desiccant below.

Desiccant refers to a substance that can remove moisture from moist substances. It is usually divided into two categories: chemical desiccants, such as calcium sulfate and calcium chloride, which dry by combining with water to form hydrates; and physical desiccants, such as silica gel and activated alumina, which dry by physically adsorbing water.

Moisture control is closely related to product yield. As far as food is concerned, under appropriate temperature and humidity, bacteria and mold in food will multiply at an alarming rate, causing the food to spoil, become damp and change color. Electronic products may also suffer from metal oxidation and malfunction due to excessive humidity. The use of desiccant is to avoid the occurrence of defective products caused by excess moisture.

1. Commonly used food desiccants include silica gel desiccants and quicklime desiccants. The ingredients are silica gel and quicklime

2. Calcium chloride desiccant, mineral desiccant, montmorillonite desiccant, fiber desiccant, column desiccant, etc. are also used in industry. The corresponding ingredients are calcium chloride, natural minerals, convex clay, natural plant fibers, fiber sheets, silica gel, etc.

3. There are also some special desiccants, such as color-changing silica gel desiccant, which is characterized by color changing. Its ingredients: cobalt chloride is used for color change, and the raw material is silica gel.

Physical adsorption

Desiccant is suitable for preventing instruments, meters, electrical equipment, medicines, food, textiles and other packaging items from getting damp. Desiccant is also widely used during sea transportation, because goods often get damp and deteriorate due to high temperatures during transportation. Desiccant can effectively remove moisture and prevent moisture, so that the quality of the goods is guaranteed.

1. Desiccant is used to prevent moisture from bottled medicines and foods. Ensure the contents are dry and prevent the growth of various molds.

2. Desiccant can be used as general packaging desiccant to prevent moisture.

3. Desiccant can be conveniently placed in the packaging of various items (such as instruments, electronic products, leather, shoes, clothing, food, medicines and household appliances, etc.) to prevent the items from getting damp, mildew or rust.

Chemical adsorption

1. Acidic desiccant: concentrated sulfuric acid and phosphorus pentoxide are used to dry acidic or neutral gases. Concentrated sulfuric acid cannot dry strongly reducing acidic gases such as hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen bromide, and hydrogen iodide; phosphorus pentoxide cannot dry ammonia.

2. Neutral desiccant: anhydrous calcium chloride, which can dry most gases, but anhydrous calcium chloride cannot dry ammonia and ethanol;

3. Alkaline desiccant: alkaline lime (a mixture of CaO, NaOH and KOH), quicklime (CaO) and NaOH solid, used to dry neutral or alkaline gases.
