What symptoms does acute gout cause

Gout can be divided into two types: acute and chronic. The main manifestation of acute gout is rapid onset, which causes great pain to the patient's body and may even cause swelling and pain in the surrounding joints. Severe cases can lead to worsening of gout. Acute gout is accompanied by fever, chills, and general discomfort. If the disease lasts for a long time, it will turn into a chronic disease. Therefore, patients with acute gout should go to the hospital for treatment as soon as they understand their symptoms.

What are the symptoms of acute gout?

Symptoms of acute gout 1. The typical symptom is severe pain in one or several joints that occurs at night. The pain will gradually worsen and become unbearable. Symptoms such as joint redness, swelling, fever and tenderness may also occur.

Symptoms of acute gout 2. Chills, fever, general malaise and increased heart rate are also symptoms of acute gouty arthritis.

Symptoms of acute gout 3. The first symptoms of acute gout often appear in one joint and last for several days, then the symptoms gradually disappear and joint function recovers. There are usually no symptoms until the next attack.

About one-third of patients with a long course of illness may develop renal complications. There are three forms of kidney damage: the first is urate nephropathy, which is caused by the deposition of urate in the renal interstitial tissue; the second is renal uric acid stones, which account for 20% to 25% of primary gout patients; the third is the widespread deposition of a large amount of uric acid crystals in the renal tubules, leading to urinary flow obstruction and symptoms of acute renal failure.

1. Uric acid nephrolithiasis 10% to 25% of gout patients may develop uric acid nephrolithiasis. Some patients even seek medical treatment with uric acid nephrolithiasis as the first symptom. Small mud-like stones are easily excreted in the urine, and the patient may not have any symptoms. Larger stones often cause renal colic and hematuria. Those with concurrent urinary tract infection may experience urinary tract irritation symptoms or low back pain such as frequent urination, urgency, and pain when urinating.

2. Gouty nephropathy often manifests as intermittent proteinuria in the early stages. The disease generally progresses slowly. As the disease progresses, proteinuria gradually becomes persistent, the kidney's concentrating function is impaired, and increased nocturia and isotonic urine occur. In the late stage, chronic renal insufficiency may occur, manifested by edema, hypertension, increased blood urea nitrogen and creatinine, and eventually the patient may die of renal failure. In a small number of patients, gouty nephropathy is the main clinical manifestation, while arthritis symptoms are not obvious. When the renal filtration function is impaired, the excretion of uric acid is reduced, which may cause an increase in blood uric acid levels. Therefore, for patients with chronic renal insufficiency and hyperuricemia, it is difficult to determine the causal relationship between hyperuricemia and kidney disease.

3. Acute renal failure: A large amount of urate crystals clog the renal tubules, renal pelvis and ureters, causing urinary tract obstruction, leading to sudden oliguria or even anuria in patients. If not treated in time, it can rapidly develop into acute renal failure and even cause death.

4. Hypertriglyceridemia About 75% of gout patients have hypertriglyceridemia, mainly type IV hyperlipoproteinemia, with elevated apo B very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and normal cholesterol levels. In addition to diet, obesity, and alcohol consumption, there are other factors that affect hypertriglyceridemia in gout patients.
