What is corneal edema?

It is said that eyes are the windows to the soul, so it is very important to take care of your eyes. Sometimes, people who wear contact lenses for a long time will find that their eye membranes are somewhat swollen. This is because the eyes are infected due to long-term use of contact lenses. The cornea is a clear, relatively transparent, and relatively round structure that covers the front half of the eye. It has many nerve endings and is very sensitive. If the cornea lacks blood vessels, it will become transparent. Either as a powerful refractive medium, it can maximize the clarity of the preserved image and enter our eyes. If there is excess hydration of the cornea or a buildup of fluid in the cornea, it can lead to corneal edema. So what exactly is going on when the cornea becomes edematous?

Experts tell us that corneal edema is caused by problems related to dehydration, viral infections, endothelial disorders, eye surgery, traumatic injuries, increased ocular pressure, and sometimes, toxins. Among them, endothelial Fuch's heterochromia iridis dystrophy is the most common cause of corneal edema. It is an inherited disease characterized by a slow, progressive loss of endothelial cells. Women are at higher risk of endothelial dystrophy than men. How to treat corneal edema? If you discover it, go to the hospital in time for effective treatment.

1. Herpes virus

An inflammatory reaction in the cornea caused by the herpes virus, resulting in corneal edema. Corneal edema may also occur immediately or years after eye surgery. It may occur due to ultrasound radiation, loss of Descemet's membrane and/or impairment of the corneal endothelial layer by injection of toxic drugs. In addition, powerful local and systemic medications can cause corneal edema. If you discover this disease, how to treat corneal edema, go to the hospital and develop a treatment plan based on the doctor's examination.

2. Performance

Symptoms of corneal edema are most notably early distortion or blurred vision, halos around light particles, eye discomfort, photophobia (increased sensitivity to light) and sensitivity to foreign objects. Symptoms can progress to severe pain in the eye due to corneal nerve damage. Phakic bullous keratopathy (Phibeca), the result of the formation of fluid-filled blisters or blisters, is usually observed after cataract surgery. How to treat corneal edema should be taken seriously and go to the hospital for treatment as soon as possible.

3. Timely treatment

Because the early symptoms of corneal edema are similar to those of cataracts, eyes with corneal edema must undergo evaluation for a correct diagnosis. An eye care professional can perform speculum scintigraphy, ultrasound, and optical pachymetry (measurement of corneal thickness) to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment for corneal edema varies based on the exact cause of the condition. In case of poor contact lens conditions caused by wear and tear or over, it is recommended to use contact lenses properly.
