What are the characteristics of povidone-iodine solution

Povidone-iodine solution is a common topical antiseptic drug. It has a certain therapeutic and bactericidal effect on fungal infections of the skin or purulent inflammation. It also has a good disinfecting effect on mild burns and mucosal injuries. It is a relatively common broad-spectrum disinfectant solution that can completely kill some fungal viruses and bacteria on the surface of the skin and mucous membranes. It is often used to treat gynecological diseases such as vaginitis and cervicitis.

Characteristics of Povidone-iodine Solution

1. It has a rapid killing effect on hundreds of bacteria and viruses such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Candida albicans, etc. This product is currently the preferred disinfectant and preservative for direct use on human skin and mucous membranes both at home and abroad.

2. It works by gradually decomposing free iodine. 80%-90% of the bound iodine can be depolymerized into free iodine, which can directly denature and precipitate the proteins in the pathogens, causing the pathogen cells to die, thereby achieving the purpose of efficient disinfection and sterilization. It is characterized by strong bactericidal power, low toxicity, and is a broad-spectrum bactericide that can kill viruses, bacteria, spores, fungi and protozoa. It has a strong killing effect on Staphylococcus aureus, gonococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Treponema pallidum, hepatitis B virus, HIV, Trichomonas vaginalis, etc.

3. External use may cause skin allergic reactions and is irritating to the skin and mucous membranes. Use on severely burned or large areas of exfoliated skin may cause systemic adverse reactions, such as metabolic acidosis, hypernatremia and renal damage. It is not suitable for topical application in patients who are allergic to iodine or have a burn area greater than 20%. It is not suitable for patients with non-toxic colloid thyroid adenoma. Pregnant women and newborns should be used with caution when using on large areas. Not recommended for children under 4 years old.

4. It has a wide bactericidal spectrum, strong bactericidal power, and can directly kill bacteria, fungi, viruses, spores and protozoa. The sterilization speed is fast, most bacteria can be killed within 30 seconds, and 5 minutes is enough to kill some bacteria. It has no irritation to the skin and mucous membranes, and can be used for disinfection and treatment of body cavities, mucous membranes and ulcer surfaces. Non-toxic. It is not easy for microorganisms to develop drug resistance and is not likely to cause allergic reactions. It has long-lasting use, good stability and long storage period. It is easily soluble in water, easy to clean, and will not stain or damage fabrics or other items.

5. This product acts as a highly effective gynecological bactericidal disinfectant. Its pH value is similar to that of the vagina and is mild. After dilution (warm water) according to the instructions, it can reach 300ppm of effective iodine, which is 10-20 times higher than the bactericidal concentration. After flushing, it can effectively kill various pathogenic microorganisms in the body.

The main indications of povidone iodine are as follows :

1. Used for purulent dermatitis, fungal skin infection, small-area mild burns and scalds, and also for disinfection of small-area skin and mucous membrane wounds.

2. Prevention and local treatment and disinfection of bacterial and fungal vaginitis, cervical erosion, Trichomonas vaginitis, genital itching, genital infection with foul odor, yellow and smelly leucorrhea, comprehensive vulvar inflammation, senile vaginitis, herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis and condyloma acuminatum.

3. Disinfection of balanitis, posthitis, external genitalia and surrounding areas. Prevention and topical treatment and disinfection of gonorrhea, syphilis, and genital warts.

4. Disinfection of tableware and eating utensils.

5. Skin disinfection at the surgical site
