What is the cause of bed-wetting due to spina bifida

Bedwetting caused by spina bifida is a medical problem. Especially if spina bifida occurs in children, they will usually show problems such as nocturnal enuresis or frequent urination. If it is confirmed that enuresis or bedwetting is caused by spina bifida, it can be treated through surgery. Therefore, if parents find that their children frequently wet the bed, they should take them to the hospital for examination in time.

1. Normal babies have "reflex urination" and can "intentionally urinate" after two to three years old. If they still urinate at will after four years old, it is called "enuresis". Enuresis in children is related to mental factors, hygiene habits, local inflammation, pinworms, environmental factors, organic diseases of the kidneys and urethra, and sacral nerve function. Survey data show that 30% to 40% of children with enuresis can be found to have occult spina bifida. Occult spina bifida is the most common congenital spinal malformation. Generally, there is only a defect in the spinal canal and the spinal cord itself is normal. Therefore, there are no neurological symptoms and it does not affect health.

2. Since the bone defects are mostly in the lumbar sacral region, there are usually no obvious clinical symptoms. Due to damage to the cauda equina, the bladder sphincter dysfunction occurs, with symptoms such as nocturnal enuresis and frequent urination. Therefore, it is necessary for children with enuresis to do sacral X-rays after excluding other factors, which may help to find the cause. There is currently no definite and effective treatment for enuresis caused by occult spina bifida. Surgery may be performed when necessary and has better results. For some people, enuresis tends to heal itself as they age and their cauda equina rises. If a child still wets the bed after the age of four, the mother should take the child to the hospital for examination in time, as the child may have occult spina bifida.

3. Occult spina bifida is a congenital developmental malformation of the spine. People with occult spina bifida generally have reduced excitability of the sacral nerves and upload dysfunction, which results in the inability of bladder filling information to effectively stimulate the excitement of the sacral nerves and upload this excitement information to the central nervous system in a timely manner, resulting in enuresis. The way to cure the symptoms of enuresis is to relieve the pressure on the sacral nerves through surgery, thereby achieving recovery. Therefore, if necessary, you can visit a spinal surgeon and choose surgery under the doctor's guidance.
