In 1930, Tillett and Fransic of the AVERY Laboratory of the Rockefeller Institute in the United States discovered that the serum of patients with acute infection could react with the C polysaccharide on the cell wall of Pneumococcus to precipitate. Later, it was confirmed that the protein involved in the reaction was a protein, so it was called C-reactive protein. The CRP gene is located on chromosome 1 q23 and its sequence is highly conserved. CRP is a member of the penetratin family with a relative molecular mass of 115×10^3. It is composed of 5 identical subunits bound by non-covalent bonds to form a symmetrical annular pentaspheric structure with a hole-shaped structure in the middle. The concave surface contains a ligand binding site. Each subunit has 206 amino acid residues and a relative molecular mass of 23×10^3.
