How to prevent moisture in the basement

As we all know, many buildings have basements. Because basements are generally warm in winter and cool in summer, going to the basement to escape the heat in the hot summer is also a good choice. However, the environment in the south is humid, and the basement environment tends to become damp easily, and the moisture will return to the main floor, which causes trouble for many people. This article will briefly introduce how to prevent moisture in the basement.

So how should we prevent moisture? Especially how to prevent moisture in the basement. It is very easy for ordinary owners to confuse the concepts of basement moisture-proofing and basement waterproofing. They often equate moisture-proofing and waterproofing, thinking that waterproofing means moisture-proofing. This is a misconception. Moisture-proofing is aimed at preventing moisture (i.e. water vapor), while waterproofing is mainly aimed at preventing liquid water. The molecular density of the waterproof layer is not enough to prevent water vapor. Therefore, moisture-proofing cannot be achieved in the same way as waterproofing. Especially in houses with basements, moisture-proof treatment of the basement is still very important.

When choosing appropriate basement moisture-proof materials, moisture-proof performance is an important indicator. Materials with poor moisture-proof performance cannot stand the test of time and cannot resist the entry of moisture. High-quality basement moisture-proof materials use high-density base materials, which have excellent moisture-proof performance and the water absorption thickness expansion rate is much smaller than the national standard. In addition, the special wear-resistant layer, decorative paper and balancing layer can "seal" the substrate well, ensuring the overall moisture-proof performance of the basement.

The simplest way is to hang some highly adsorbent desiccants in the basement. The most common one is activated carbon bag. You can also sprinkle some desiccants in some corners and on the ground that are prone to moisture. You can crush mothballs and sprinkle them with activated carbon powder to remove moisture, but the desiccant must be replaced every once in a while.

Since the main cause of humidity is ventilation problems, it is best to install ventilation equipment in the basement. If conditions permit, you can add a few skylights for ventilation.

Check whether there are cracks or damp spots on the basement walls or floors. If there are cracks and aging areas that are prone to moisture, it is best to scrape off the aging walls that are prone to mold and dampness. The scraped area should be slightly wider than the aging area, and then re-apply sealing paint.

Do not place any plants in the basement. You can put a dehumidifier in it. Generally, if the basement is not too big, the effect of the dehumidifier will be more obvious.

Activated carbon can also keep your basement in a good humidity environment. Due to the dual functions of activated carbon in absorbing moisture and retaining moisture (two-way humidity control), the basement will not be disturbed by moisture during long-term use, and will not become damp and moldy. This effect is especially significant during the rainy season.

It is recommended to use some basement materials with good moisture-proof performance, such as laying a layer of tiles with good moisture-proof performance.
