Do you know the reason why ketone bodies are high in urine routine tests? In fact, when the human body lacks insulin or lacks sugar, the concentration of ketone bodies will increase. Ketone bodies are an acidic substance. If they accumulate too much in the blood, it may cause ketoacidosis. Therefore, if ketone bodies are found to be high in urine routine tests, it should be taken seriously. 1. Urinary ketone bodies (KET) are the general term for acetoacetate, β-hydroxybutyrate and acetone, which are intermediate products of fatty acid metabolism in the body. Under normal circumstances, the body produces a small amount of ketone bodies, generally not exceeding 1.0 mg/dL, and ketone bodies cannot be detected in the urine. Positive results can be divided into trace amounts and 1 to 4 plus signs. The more plus signs there are, the higher the ketone body concentration. When there is insufficient insulin or lack of sugar in the body (starvation ketosis), and fat is overly decomposed, the concentration of ketone bodies increases, and some of the ketone bodies can be excreted from the body through urine, forming ketonuria. Ketone bodies are acidic substances. When they accumulate too much in the blood, they can make the blood acidic and cause acidosis, which is called ketoacidosis. 2. Ketone bodies in urine are the combination of three different components, namely acetone, acetoacetic acid and β-hydroxybutyric acid. They are the intermediate products of fat metabolism in the body. Under normal circumstances, they are produced in very small amounts and cannot be detected by our current conventional methods. Therefore, the normal qualitative test is negative. However, they are negative in hunger, when sugar metabolism is impaired due to various reasons, when lipolysis is increased, and when there is diabetic acidosis. Because the rate of ketone body production is greater than the rate of tissue utilization, ketonemia may occur, followed by ketonuria. 3. Ketone body positive may be the following: 1. In diabetic patients, a strong positive result (+++ or above) will appear in case of diabetic acidosis. At this time, attention should be paid as toxic coma may occur easily and treatment measures should be taken in time. 2. Severe vomiting, diarrhea, long-term malnutrition, hunger, and after strenuous exercise. 3. Pregnant women suffer from severe vomiting, eclampsia, digestive and absorption disorders, etc. due to pregnancy reactions. |
