Main symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease

Main symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease

When it comes to inflammatory bowel disease, many people don’t know what it means. This is a relatively broad term. In general, when patients suffer from dry intestinal inflammatory diseases, they are all considered inflammatory bowel disease. For example, diseases that occur in the rectum, ileum, and colon can all be called inflammatory bowel disease. When suffering from this disease, patients will experience diarrhea, abdominal pain, and some patients may even have bloody stools.

Inflammatory bowel disease symptoms

In addition to the common gastrointestinal manifestations, the clinical symptoms and signs of IBD in children often include obvious extraintestinal manifestations such as arthritis, growth retardation, weight loss, malnutrition, anemia, anorexia nervosa, etc. Growth retardation is especially unique to growing children and often appears in infancy. Ulcerative colitis: Most UC cases have an insidious onset, or mild diarrhea, blood in the stool, or only occult blood in the stool. About 30% of children have obvious symptoms with an acute onset, mostly in infants and young children. They may have diarrhea 10 to 30 times a day, with bloody stools, mucus, bloody stools, or pus and blood in the stools. Those with rectal invasion may have tenesmus. Spasmodic abdominal pain often occurs before or during bowel movements and is relieved after bowel movements. There is obvious tenderness in the left lower abdomen, and there may be muscle tension or a hard tubular colon.

Systemic symptoms include fever, fatigue, anemia; in severe cases, there are dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, acid-base imbalance, etc. Failure to gain weight and slow growth are also the earliest clinical manifestations of ulcerative colitis in children. There may be extraintestinal manifestations such as arthritis, joint pain, iridocyclitis, hepatomegaly, etc.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Diet

Follow the principle of a semi-liquid or even residue-free full-liquid diet, and gradually add different foods as the condition improves. Start with a liquid diet that can be tolerated, then a semi-liquid diet, and then solid food. Try adding one or two foods every few days, but these foods should not cause or aggravate any symptoms. If you can tolerate a fiber-containing diet, you can eat easily digestible foods such as tender, cooked vegetables, canned or cooked fruit, and starches such as cooked oatmeal, whole-wheat noodles, and tortillas. During remission, a variety of foods can be eaten as tolerated, including fruits, vegetables, a variety of grains, lean meats, and low-fat or fat-free dairy products. During the active phase of the disease, abdominal pain, diarrhea and poor appetite can lead to nutritional impairment, and the hormones commonly used in active phase treatment can also increase protein consumption, so energy and protein intake should be increased during this period.

After disease activity is under control, the following foods may be recommended: light fruit juice, applesauce, canned fruit, oatmeal, boiled chicken, fish, hard-boiled eggs, mashed potatoes, rice or noodles, bread, etc. Avoid allergic foods. If you find that you have a similar reaction every time you eat a certain food, you should be wary of whether you are allergic to it and can choose other foods instead.
