What to do if your nose bleeds

What to do if your nose bleeds

When our nose is hit, it is easy to bleed. At this time, bleeding is mainly caused by damage to capillaries and nasal mucosa. When you encounter nose bleeding, the first thing you need to do is to master the correct method of stopping bleeding. Then go to the hospital for examination in time to determine whether the bones are injured. So, how to stop nose bleeding? Let’s take a look at the specific methods below.

The wrong way to stop a nosebleed

Both tilting the head back to stop bleeding and stuffing tissues into the nose are wrong. Generally, stuffing cotton or tissues into the nose to stop bleeding often fails to stop the bleeding because of insufficient pressure or wrong location. Instead, it may cause more bleeding.

Lying down to stop bleeding is also a wrong approach. Once the body lies down, the blood that was originally flowing out of the nose will flow back into the mouth, throat and other parts of the body. If a child has a nosebleed, do not let him/her lie flat, otherwise he/she may have difficulty breathing or swallow a large amount of blood, which may irritate the gastric mucosa and cause vomiting.

Correct pressing method

When we have a nosebleed, we can stop the bleeding by pressing the base of the nose with our hands. It usually stops within a few minutes or 10 minutes. When stopping the bleeding, maintain a correct sitting posture, breathe completely through your mouth, and press tightly against the top of the nose on the bleeding side with your hand.

If bleeding continues after applying pressure, we can hold a piece of ice in our mouth, wipe our neck with a cool towel, or put an ice pack on our forehead to stop the bleeding.

When the bleeding stops, a blood clot may form, but do not remove it immediately to avoid causing further bleeding.

Hooking the middle finger

Not many people may know this method. Generally, when the nose is bleeding, we just need to hook the middle fingers of both hands together, and the bleeding will stop within tens of seconds. This method is also applicable to children.

Preventing Nosebleeds

First, we need to break the habit of rubbing our nose and moisturize our nasal cavity. You should know that your nose also needs hydration. Pay attention to adjusting the indoor air humidity. You can spray some cool water or place some flowers indoors. If your nose feels dry, you can wipe it gently with a towel or cotton dipped in warm water.

To prevent nosebleeds, you should also pay attention to your diet. Don't eat too much fried or greasy food. Eat more vegetables and fruits, and make sure to replenish your body with water. In addition, black fungus and lotus root powder have astringent and hemostatic effects, so you can eat them more often.
