Harm of corneal lenses to eyes

Nowadays, many people buy corneal lenses to wear in order to prevent or improve eye diseases such as myopia. But do you know that many corneal lenses can cause certain damage to our eyes? Even many people did not experience improved vision after wearing corneal lenses, but instead experienced corneal inflammation. Today we will learn about the harm that corneal lenses can cause to the eyes.

Orthokeratology lenses are designed for myopic patients with keratoconus and other special corneal diseases. If an experienced ophthalmologist sees something wrong with this sentence, it is obvious that the author is confusing orthokeratology lenses with RGP. Although both are hard contact lenses, their intended users are completely different. Orthokeratology lenses are mainly used for children with myopia within 600 degrees. If they meet the requirements after examination, they can effectively control the progression of myopia and improve naked eye vision. RGP is mainly used for patients with high myopia above 600 and keratoconus. It is obvious that the post refers to RGP, not orthokeratology lenses.

If you are not careful, orthokeratology lenses can cause corneal inflammation, perforation, and even blindness.

This issue is also the one that all parents are most concerned about. my country introduced this technology in 1998, and so far, millions of people have received this treatment. In the first 2-3 years, due to the lack of medical management and standardized operations, hospitals that developed this technology did not have a deep understanding of orthokeratology for treating myopia, had very limited fitting experience and technology, poor consumer compliance, exaggerated propaganda and misleading information from media advertisements and product promoters, and some unqualified companies and eyewear stores started to sell orthokeratology lenses as ordinary commodities, creating a chaotic situation with good and bad products. Relevant departments also failed to strictly supervise the quality of orthokeratology lenses, which resulted in some serious adverse phenomena among Chinese wearers of orthokeratology technology in the first few years, attracting close attention from domestic and international media. Of course, the occurrence of this problem has a lot to do with the patient's improper operation and failure to undergo regular follow-up examinations.

Therefore, many of the adverse reactions to wearing orthokeratology lenses that are now flooding the Internet occurred at that stage rather than at the current stage. Currently, orthokeratology lenses have developed to the latest fourth generation product. There are very few reports in the media about serious adverse events caused by wearing orthokeratology lenses. Strict fitting by qualified optometrists + qualified lenses + qualified users (patients) = safe and effective.

The thinning of the center of the cornea; the thinning of the center of the cornea is one of the main causes of "keratoconus" (commonly known as "exophthalmos").

The normal central thickness of the cornea is about 0.565mm. After observing patients who wore them overnight for 7 years, we found that the central cornea was slightly thinned by 0.009mm after wearing them, but the differences were not statistically significant. In addition, at the initial stage of fitting, the patient’s corneal thickness will be checked. If there is keratoconus, the patient is not suitable for fitting.
