High myopia plus high astigmatism

High myopia plus high astigmatism

Everyone hates myopia, but due to the popularity of the Internet, people’s lives and work are now inseparable from mobile phones and computers. On the one hand, people communicate with the outside world through mobile phones, and on the other hand, many tasks need to be completed through computers. Excessive use of mobile phones and computers has caused people's eyesight to deteriorate. Some may also develop high levels of astigmatism. So what are the dangers of high myopia and high astigmatism?

The dangers of high myopia

High myopia has become one of the common causes of blindness, ranking sixth among blinding diseases in my country. Generally speaking, the higher the degree, the greater the possibility of complications. Common complications of high myopia are as follows:

1. Retinal detachment. People with high myopia may suffer retinal detachment if they engage in strenuous, impactful head sports, such as football, basketball, diving, bungee jumping, etc. If you consume a lot of spicy food and alcohol in your diet, it will cause repeated bleeding in the macular area of the fundus.

2. Posterior scleral staphyloma. The main manifestations are backward expansion of the posterior pole of the eyeball, degeneration and atrophy of the optic nerve and retina around the macula, and decreased corrected visual acuity. The higher the degree of myopia, the higher the incidence of posterior scleral staphyloma.

3. Retinal disease. For people with high myopia, the elongation of the eye axis and posterior scleral staphyloma can easily lead to retinal diseases, which are mainly manifested as retinal degeneration, holes, hemorrhage, etc., and severe cases can lead to blindness.

4. Cataracts and glaucoma. People with high myopia are prone to cataracts, and the incidence of open-angle glaucoma is 6 to 8 times higher than that of normal people. However, since the clinical symptoms of glaucoma are not obvious and the decline in visual function is often masked by the symptoms of high myopia, it is easy to be ignored.

5. Subretinal neovascularization. The incidence rate is 5%-40%. It manifests as new blood vessels under the retina in the posterior pole, causing bleeding and affecting vision.

The dangers of high astigmatism

Astigmatism is an abnormal refractive error of the eye, which is related to the curvature of the cornea. It is usually congenital, but in some cases, astigmatism may occur due to long-term pressure on the eyeball caused by a chalazion on the eyelid.

If high astigmatism is not corrected in time, it will not only affect normal life, but may also cause symptoms such as eye soreness and headaches. It can also easily lead to bad postures such as tilted head, which has a great negative impact on children and adolescents. Therefore, it must not be taken lightly.

Astigmatism generally manifests as visual fatigue and blurred vision. People with severe astigmatism have blurred and distorted vision, and cannot see clearly both near and far. They will feel eye swelling and headaches if they work at close range for a long time, and they will have skipped lines or double images when reading.

Prevention of high myopia and astigmatism

Experts from the Multi-View Vision Center remind that in addition to paying attention to scientific eye use and developing good hygiene habits in daily life, the prevention of myopia and astigmatism also requires regular visits to professional ophthalmology centers for examinations and eye tests. It is best for children to have their first full eye examination when they are 3 to 4 years old, and then have regular eye examinations 1 to 2 times a year thereafter to prevent problems before they occur.
