What is the reason for chin numbness

What is the reason for chin numbness

We know that numbness in parts of the body often indicates that the human body has certain cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. For example, numbness in the limbs is usually a typical symptom of patients with cerebral infarction, so people attach great importance to numbness in the limbs. However, simple numbness in the chin will be ignored by many people. Some women have experienced chin numbness for several months, and only seek medical attention when they experience other discomfort symptoms, only to be told by the doctor that it is caused by cancer metastasis.

1. What is "mandibular numbing syndrome"

Mandibular numbness syndrome is a relatively rare disease in clinical practice. It refers to acute or subacute numbness of the jaw caused by unknown reasons, 90% of which occurs on one side. Clinically, the main manifestations are abnormal numbness of the jaw and loss of touch, hot and cold sensations, very little pain, and the sense of taste and muscle bite strength are not affected.

2. Hazards

What we need to be most careful about is cancer metastasis. The discomfort in the jaw caused by cancer metastasis is called "malignant mandibular anesthetic syndrome." The trigeminal nerve is located below the alveolar socket and penetrates into the mandible. Cancer cells are easily deposited here through blood circulation, compressing the trigeminal nerve, causing loss of touch and temperature sensation of the jaw. A few people experience pain, but because the sense of taste and muscle bite strength are not affected, many people tend to ignore it. Studies have shown that up to 30% of patients with malignant mandibular anesthesia syndrome do not know that they have cancer and ignore the numbness and pain in their jaw. Delayed diagnosis affects the prognosis, with an average survival period of 15 months. If unexplained chin numbness extends beyond the midline of the chin or continues to expand, the possibility of cancer metastasis should be highly suspected.

3. Causes

There are three main causes of chin numbness, namely cancer metastasis, immune disease and dental problems, among which cancer metastasis is the most serious. There are many causes of mandibular anesthesia syndrome, mainly malignant cancer metastasis, odontogenic problems, and nerve compression caused by mandibular aging. The most common cause is mandibular numbness syndrome, followed by cancer metastasis, and the immune system is the last.

1. Cancer metastasis

30% of MMS occur before cancer diagnosis, and the average survival is 15 months.

2. Dental problems

Odontogenic disease is caused by improper dental implants and dentures. In recent years, the trend of dental implants has been booming and the number of patients is increasing. The most common sites of mandibular anesthesia syndrome are the lower lip, the front of the chin, and the inner gums. Symptoms usually last for several days to several months. Although the function will generally be restored after the dentures are removed, if it lasts too long, the nerves will be compressed and the numbness will follow for a lifetime. In view of the popularity of dental implants in recent years, patients are reminded to first assess the thickness of the mandibular bone and the direction of the nerves to avoid inadvertent compression of the mandibular nerve, which may lead to complications.

3. Immune diseases

In addition, immunoglobulins secreted by patients with immune diseases tend to deposit here and compress the nerves, eventually leading to numbness problems. It is necessary to find out what disease is causing it so that the right medicine can be prescribed.
