What does eye optometry mean

What does eye optometry mean

Eye examination requires a medical test of the current degree and pathological condition of the eyes, and then glasses are fitted according to the results of the examination. Because glasses are not something you can buy casually, you need to go to a professional eyewear store to buy them to ensure that the glasses look simple and good-looking, and more suitable for you.

Professional medical "eye examination and glasses fitting" is a complex medical process. Glasses are a medical tool for correcting refractive diseases and are by no means a general commodity. Accuracy, durability, comfort and beauty are the standards for evaluating the quality of glasses fitting.

The content of medical optometry includes the degree of optometry, eye position, accommodation power, binocular single vision function, convergence function, binocular accommodation balance, and identification of the dominant eye. Finally, a scientific optometry prescription is issued based on the above-mentioned conditions to achieve the purpose of wearing glasses clearly, comfortably, beautifully and healthily. At the same time, it enables non-surgical correction of refractive errors, correction of strabismus and other medical technologies to reach a higher level.

Myopia refers to a refractive state in which when the eye is not using accommodation, parallel light rays are refracted through the eye's refractive system and focus falls in front of the retina. Therefore, myopic eyes cannot see distant targets clearly. If the target is gradually moved closer to the eye, the emitted light will be dispersed to a certain extent to the eye, and the focus will move backwards. When the target object moves closer to a certain point in front of the eye. The closer this point is to the eye, the greater the degree of myopia.

The main cause of myopia is the excessive length of the anterior-posterior axis of the eyeball (called axial myopia), followed by a strong refractive power of the eye (called refractive myopia). Myopia mostly occurs in adolescence, and genetic factors have a certain influence, but its occurrence and development are closely related to insufficient lighting, improper reading posture, and long-term close work.

Most myopia occurs in adolescents. The degree of myopia increases year by year during the development and growth stage, and stops developing or develops slowly after maturity. The degree of myopia rarely exceeds 6D, no degenerative changes occur in the fundus, and vision can be corrected with glasses. This is called simple myopia. Another type of myopia occurs earlier (between the ages of 5 and 10) and progresses rapidly, continuing to develop after the age of 25. The degree of myopia can reach more than 15D, often accompanied by fundus changes, and vision is difficult to correct. This is called degenerative myopia. In addition, myopia below 3D is usually called mild myopia, 3 to 6D is called moderate myopia, and above 6D is called high myopia.

A large number of surveys, especially those on people who have worn glasses for many years, have shown that people who wear frame glasses or contact lenses after medical optometry are extremely unlikely to develop visual fatigue, their myopia is more stable, and its progression is slow or stops.

Developed countries have always regarded fitting glasses as a strictly medical act, requiring optometrists to have a background in optometry at a medical school. Fitting glasses must be performed by a professional optometrist who performs medical optometry and then issues a detailed optometry prescription.
