Is enhanced MRI harmful to humans?

Many people who have undergone MRI scans know that MRI imaging will not cause harm to the body and has unique advantages that other imaging examinations do not have. However, many careful examinees have discovered that the MRIs they took seemed a little different, and they had to inject an enhancer before the examination, but will this enhancer cause damage to the human body? What are the dangers of MRI enhancement agents?

When we do enhanced MRI scans, we must have a correct understanding that in clinical practice, some diseases can be clearly diagnosed with just a plain scan, but some diseases cannot be clearly detected and diagnosed with a plain scan and require an enhanced scan, especially when a tumor is present. When doing enhanced scanning, the main purpose is to increase the density difference between diseased tissue and normal tissue, so that the lesions are clearly exposed. At the same time, diagnosis and identification are carried out based on the blood supply of the lesions and the distribution of surrounding blood vessels.

1. Magnetic resonance imaging is an examination method that uses electronic computers to analyze and diagnose human body cross-sections. It does not use X-rays, but magnetic fields. Its basic principle is that the hydrogen atoms contained in the human body will resonate when given specific high waves under a strong magnetic field, generating a high-wave number electromagnetic wave. Nuclear magnetic resonance uses this property to collect, process and graph the changes in the magnetic field using electronic computers.

2. Magnetic resonance imaging can show fat, internal organs, muscles, fast-flowing blood, bones and air, etc. The internal structure of the organs can also be clearly displayed. Doctors can easily identify tumors, inflammation, necrotic lesions, abnormal substance deposits, functional obstructions, blood circulation obstructions and other lesions in the patient's body. It provides great help in the diagnosis of various diseases of the nervous system, chest, abdomen and limbs.

3. Since MRI is magnetic field imaging rather than X-ray and has no radioactivity, it is harmless to the human body and is very safe. So far, there has been no report in the world of any harm caused by the use of MRI machines in hospitals, nor has any increase in the incidence of gene mutations or chromosomal aberrations in patients been found.

Before performing a CT or MRI enhanced scan, a contrast agent is injected into the patient's vein. Due to individual differences, under certain circumstances, some of the subjects will experience adverse reactions, such as nausea in the digestive tract, neurotoxicity such as dizziness, hallucinations, vascular toxicity, and renal toxicity. Allergic reactions can also be classified as mild, moderate, or severe. The incidence of mild allergic reactions is 3 to 4 percent, and the main symptoms are nausea, dizziness, hot throat, redness of the skin, and sneezing. The incidence of severe allergic reactions is approximately 1% to 1.5%, mainly manifested by mild laryngeal edema and severe urticaria all over the body. The incidence of severe allergies is extremely low, and symptoms include severe edema and spasm of the trachea and bronchial tubes, and a significant drop in blood pressure.

Although MRI enhancers may cause certain harm to the body, the possibility of this happening is relatively low. Most people will not experience adverse reactions when taking them. Moreover, medical staff have good rescue techniques, and timely treatment of allergic reactions can ensure the safety of patients in the shortest time possible!
