Feeling sleepy and want to sleep all the time

Many people have symptoms of fatigue, weakness and always wanting to sleep. If this problem exists for a long time, it means that the patient is likely to have narcolepsy. There are different types of narcolepsy, such as primary narcolepsy, narcolepsy, and hypersomnia. Different types of narcolepsy have different symptoms and coping methods, which will be introduced in detail below!

Primary hypersomnia

This type of hypersomnia is characterized by complaints of excessive sleepiness for at least one month, with prolonged sleep time almost every day or an uncontrollable urge to sleep during the day. Moreover, this situation is not caused by not sleeping well the night before or lack of sleep, nor is it caused by the use of drugs or poor physical condition. At this time, it can be preliminarily determined to be primary hypersomnia.

Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a condition characterized by irresistible sleepiness and cataplexy that occurs every day for at least three months. During a cataplexy attack, the narcoleptic patient himself is usually aware of what is happening. This is caused by strong emotions that cause the muscle tension on both sides of the body to disappear, so that the patient suddenly becomes limp and falls down. REM occurs soon after falling asleep during the day. Some people have vivid hallucinations just as sleep begins or ends, and some people experience sleep paralysis.

Narcolepsy

The excessive sleepiness symptom of narcolepsy refers to falling asleep suddenly during daily activities and in inappropriate places during the day, such as eating, driving, and working. Such patients often have experience of traffic accidents or work accidents. However, patients with narcolepsy often complain of insomnia at night. This may be because frequent hypnagogic hallucinations or sleep paralysis cause intermittent sleep at night and prevent them from sleeping through the night; it may also be because of excessive daytime sleepiness, which interferes with their sleep at night. Although patients with narcolepsy always seem to be in a drowsy and sleepy state, their total sleep hours in a 24-hour day are not longer than those of normal people.
