What to do if vomiting gets into the nose?

Newborns are prone to choking on milk in daily life because their organs are not yet fully developed, so spitting up milk often occurs. Sometimes the spitting up of milk will choke the nasal cavity. For new parents, when the baby chokes on milk in the nasal cavity due to spitting up milk, they are often at a loss and panic, not knowing what to do. Here’s what to do if vomiting enters your nasal cavity.

What to do if a newborn chokes on his nose after spitting up milk

Spitting up is a common symptom in newborns. There are many reasons, which may be caused by physiological factors or may be early symptoms of serious diseases. If the spitting up is physiological and the newborn's appetite, spirit and weight are all normal, there is no need to pay attention to it. It will return to normal by about 8 months old. If the cough and spitting up are caused by cold, fever, diarrhea, etc., you should see a doctor immediately.

In order to prevent newborns from choking on milk, you should pay attention to the following during feeding:

1. Mothers with inverted nipples should pull out the nipples. If possible, this action should be started in the late pregnancy. When feeding with a bottle, be careful not to make the hole on the nipple too large to prevent the newborn from sucking too quickly or too hard.

2. The breastfeeding posture should be "high eyes and low hands". That is to say, when the mother is holding the baby and feeding breast milk, she should try to place the baby's head higher and the body slightly lower, which can reduce the occurrence of newborn spitting up. When feeding milk powder to a newborn, try to let the newborn sit or stand to drink, and do not let the newborn lie down to drink.

3. Appropriately reduce the amount of milk fed each time. When a newborn baby spit up milk, you can shorten the time of each feeding and do not feed the newborn baby for a long time. Allow the newborn baby to digest and absorb the food slowly. Gradually, after the newborn baby's stomach and intestines adapt, the spitting up will stop.

4. Burp the newborn after each feeding, and then let the newborn go back to sleep in a side-lying position. The best feeding position is to hold the baby while feeding. When feeding, it is not advisable to tease the newborn or feed the newborn when he is crying.

Reasons why newborns spit up easily

1. Determined by the physiological anatomical position of the stomach. Because the stomach of a newborn is horizontal, and generally speaking, the entrance of the stomach is relatively loose, and the stomach capacity is small, it is easy for the baby to vomit milk.

In addition, the position of the larynx of newborns is relatively higher than that of adults, and they have not yet mastered the breastfeeding posture, which makes it easy for air to be inhaled into the stomach along with the milk when they feed. Therefore, when the newborn hiccups or shakes its body, the milk it feeds is more likely to be spit out.

2. Swallowing air while feeding can also cause newborn babies to spit up milk. Newborns may spit up if they swallow a lot of air while feeding or crying excessively. After the air enters the stomach, because the gas is lighter than the liquid and is located at the top, it can easily break through the cardia and come out, and it will also bring out some milk, which will cause vomiting.

3. Newborn vomiting caused by indigestion and other diseases

Diseases that can cause vomiting in newborns include: fever, upper respiratory tract infection, some intestinal infections, intestinal obstruction, intussusception, some lesions of the nervous system (meningitis), some digestive tract malformations (such as congenital pyloric hypertrophy, annular pancreas), etc.
