The principle of vitamin b6 in stopping vomiting

Many women take vitamin B6 in moderation during pregnancy. Especially women who have severe pregnancy reactions and morning sickness will choose vitamin B6. However, although taking vitamin B6 during pregnancy has an antiemetic effect, if it is used too much, it is very likely to develop "vitamin B6 dependence", the consequence of which is that the infant will have neurological abnormalities after birth.

Vitamin B6 includes: pyridoxal, pyridoxine, and pyridoxamine. Pyridoxal phosphate is a coenzyme of many transaminases and decarboxylases. It plays an important role in amino acid metabolism. It can promote the decarboxylation of glutamate and enhance the production of γ-aminobutyric acid. GABA is an important inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain that can inhibit vomiting. Based on the above principle, VB6 is used clinically to treat vomiting during pregnancy.

However, some pregnant mothers are afraid that early pregnancy reactions will affect their own and the fetus's health, so they take large amounts of vitamin B6 for a long time. Little do they know that excessive intake will bring serious adverse consequences to the fetus. Under normal circumstances, the fetus only needs 1-2 mg of vitamin B6 a day for growth and development, and this amount of vitamin B6 can be obtained from the mother's diet. If the mother takes too much vitamin B6, the fetus will easily become dependent on it, which is medically known as "vitamin B6 dependence". After the fetus is separated from the mother, the source of vitamin B6 is not as much as in the mother's body, so it will produce many abnormal neurological manifestations, such as frequent crying, easy excitement or fright, eye tremors or repeated convulsions, etc. It can be seen from this that expectant mothers cannot take vitamin B6 at will.

Therefore, pregnant women who want to relieve morning sickness can do so by improving their diet. The food you eat should be simple at first and then diversified, and try to cater to the eating habits and preferences of pregnant women, such as sour, sweet, salty, and spicy food, allowing them to choose as they like.

The content of vitamin B6 in animal and plant foods is very small. Yeast powder contains the most, and rice bran or white rice also contains a lot. The next is from meat, poultry, fish, potatoes, sweet potatoes and vegetables. If the daily diet is normal, pregnant women do not need special vitamin B6 supplements, but if they are pregnant with multiples or are younger pregnant women, they need additional supplements. Taking vitamin B6 in early pregnancy can help relieve morning sickness.
