Why do I have green stools

Why do I have green stools

We all know that normal people's stools should be dark brown and look like lumps. Only sometimes, because of eating darker-colored foods, the color of the stool may change with the food eaten. Just like if we eat more watermelon, the stool may be a little reddish, and if we eat more cucumbers, the stool will be a little green. So why do we have green stools?

The stool is green, watery or pasty, has a sour smell and is foamy. It is often seen in diseases such as indigestion and intestinal dysfunction. If the green stool is mixed with pus, it is a sign of acute enteritis or bacillary dysentery. Patients who have undergone major abdominal surgery or received extensive antibiotic treatment, if they suddenly have green watery stools with a fishy odor and grayish-white flaky, translucent, egg-white pseudomembranes, may have Staphylococcus aureus enteritis. In addition, eating a lot of foods containing chlorophyll or excessive acidity in the intestines can also turn the stool green.

The stool of a healthy person is yellow or brown and cylindrical in shape. It is yellow when they eat more carbohydrates and brown when they eat more protein. Certain diseases or individual medicines and foods can affect the color of stool, so the color of stool can also be used to observe the pathological condition of organs.

Green stool: Adults suffer from indigestion, intestinal dysfunction and other diseases. If the green stool is mixed with pus, it is acute enteritis. In addition, if you eat a lot of vegetables or the acidity in your intestines is too high, your stool will also turn green. If the stool of infants and young children is green, it is diarrhea, accompanied by watery or pasty stools, foamy stools, and a sour and smelly smell.

Green stools may be caused by:

1. Excessive iron in food

2. The fat in the food is high-quality fat, and the secreted bile is not completely used up and is excreted with the stool

3. Indigestion or inflammation. In your case, it could be indigestion. Because the bile in the digestive system is yellow-green in color, it is produced by liver cells and stored in the gallbladder. However, after eating, the gallbladder contracts and discharges bile into the duodenum, which colors the food, so the color of the stool is mostly yellow. If the abnormal color persists...it's time to get it checked out.
