Is the water purifier useful?

I believe that many people have water purifiers in their homes because they are not confident about the quality of local water and are worried that it may contain a lot of toxic substances. Therefore, they will choose to use water purifiers to remove toxic substances in the water, so that they will feel safer drinking the treated water. So, let's find out whether water purifiers are useful or not.

Benefits of air purifiers: eliminate smoke and dust, sterilize and disinfect, eliminate odors, remove formaldehyde, etc., and purify various harmful substances in the room. Of course, because there are many brands of air purifiers, the functions may vary depending on the brand, but generally speaking, they are similar.

1. Adsorption filtration: Activated carbon layer Activated carbon is a porous carbon-containing material with a highly developed pore structure.

The porous structure of activated carbon provides it with a large surface area, which can fully contact with the gas (impurities), thus giving activated carbon unique adsorption properties, making it very easy to absorb and collect impurities. Just like magnetism, all molecules have mutual attraction, which absorbs many free harmful gases.

Note: Ordinary activated carbon cannot adsorb all toxic gases, has low efficiency and is easily saturated and causes desorption.

2. Mechanical filtration: HEPA net HEPA (High efficiency particulate air Filter), which means high-efficiency air filter in Chinese, is a filter net that meets the HEPA standard. The efficiency of 0.3 microns reaches 99.998%. The characteristic of HEPA net is that air can pass through, but fine particles cannot pass through. The HEPA filter consists of a stack of sub-glass fiber membranes that are folded back and forth continuously to form a wavy gasket for placing and supporting the filter medium.

3. Electrostatic purification

Working principle: It adopts the working principle of high-voltage electrostatic adsorption dust removal. The electrostatic type uses the working principle of high-voltage electrostatic adsorption to remove dust. The cathode line in the electrostatic field generates corona discharge under the action of high-voltage static electricity, and a large number of negative ions are generated in the corona layer. Under the action of the electrostatic field, the negative ions continuously move toward the anode. When dust in the air passes through the electric field, the dust is charged by the collision of negative ions. The charged dust is also affected by the electrostatic field and moves toward the anode (dust collecting electrode), releasing the charge after reaching the anode. Simply put, it uses static electricity to absorb dust! Note: It can remove floating dust (it cannot remove toxic gases), its efficiency is lower and slower than the mechanical type, and it is easy to produce ozone. This model is rated as the worst purifier in the US market. There is currently no technology in China that can prevent the production of ozone under the action of static electricity.

4. Photocatalytic method

Working principle: When air passes through the photocatalytic air purification device, the photocatalyst itself does not change under the irradiation of light, but it can promote chemical reactions. Harmful substances in the air, such as formaldehyde and benzene, are degraded under the action of photocatalysis to produce non-toxic and harmless substances, and bacteria in the air are also removed by ultraviolet light, so the air is purified. Note: It has a broad spectrum but requires a low air flow rate, has a slow purification speed and has certain radiation to the human body. It is an eliminated purification method in Europe and the United States.
