Is bone marrow biopsy harmful to the body?

In modern life, there are many advanced means of disease examination. People can use advanced examination methods to timely discover various disease factors and lay a solid diagnostic foundation for treatment. There are many examination methods. Among them, bone marrow puncture is a relatively popular method with excellent diagnostic effect. However, since this method is a kind of trauma to the body, let’s take a look at whether bone marrow puncture is harmful to the body?

Many patients think that bone marrow puncture is a scary thing, but it is not. The method of bone puncture is actually very simple. Generally, a small amount of anesthetic is injected locally at the anterior (or posterior) superior ridge of the ilium or the sternum, and a small drop of bone marrow tissue is extracted with a bone puncture needle. The entire bone puncture process takes only a few minutes for a skilled doctor. After the bone marrow is extracted, the patient can get up and move around immediately.

Although myeloplasty is an invasive examination, it does not cause major harm to the body and does not require special care because the operation is simple, less bone marrow fluid is extracted, and the patient suffers little pain. For those with weak constitution and bleeding tendency, the following measures should be taken after the examination.

1. Hemostasis: Generally, compression is the main method for hemostasis.

2. Rest in bed: After the examination, there will be slight pain at the puncture site. The patient can rest in bed for one day and limit limb activities to return to normal.

3. Prevent infection: During puncture, the local tissue is strictly disinfected. Keep the puncture site clean and dry. If the covering gauze is wetted by blood or sweat, it should be replaced promptly. When the needle hole becomes red, swollen, hot, or painful, apply 2% iodine tincture or 0.5% iodine tincture to the area 3-4 times a day. If accompanied by systemic fever, you should contact your doctor and choose antibiotics appropriately according to your condition.

Advantages of bone marrow biopsy

● Clear diagnosis

There are more than a dozen types of leukemia, with widely varying prognoses and treatments. Peripheral venous blood tests alone cannot accurately classify the disease, and bone marrow biopsy is the best method. Bone marrow puncture is also essential for the diagnosis of diseases such as multiple myeloma. For unexplained bone metastases, bone puncture may yield tumor cells, thereby confirming the diagnosis.

● Disease staging

Malignant lymphoma often invades the bone marrow and even causes leukemia, indicating that the tumor has entered the late stage. In order to accurately determine the clinical stage and treatment plan, bone marrow biopsy should be performed routinely before the first treatment.

● Efficacy judgment

During the treatment of leukemia, multiple myeloma and malignant lymphoma, bone marrow puncture examinations are required at multiple sites and multiple times. By dynamically observing the bone marrow condition, the efficacy can be judged and the treatment plan adjusted in a timely manner.
