How to use elastic bandage

In the supportive treatment of varicose veins, it is also important to correctly apply the elastic bandage. If the elastic bandage is used incorrectly, it will not only fail to treat varicose veins well, but on the contrary will cause some unnecessary side effects. So how do you use an elastic bandage correctly? Let’s take a closer look below, and I hope it will be helpful to all friends who need treatment for varicose veins.

1. Use bandages of different widths according to different parts of the body. Generally, small elastic bandages (7.5X450cm wide) are used for upper limbs, medium elastic bandages (10X450cm wide) are used below the knees, and large elastic bandages (15*450cm wide) are used above the knees. The bandaging method depends on the purpose of use. The elastic bandage used to support circulation should support the veins and offset the increased venous pressure, but the pressure should not be too high to limit venous return or arterial blood supply.

2. The elastic bandage must be smooth and wrinkle-free after wrapping, especially at the joints. If the knee joint moves, the bandage will easily wrinkle, causing pressure on the popliteal fossa, just like a tourniquet. The tightness of the wrapping should also be appropriate, and should be such that you feel comfortable after wrapping. The elastic bandage should be applied before getting up every morning. If the patient has already gotten up, the patient should be allowed to lie back in bed, with the limbs elevated to allow the venous blood to drain, and then the bandage should be applied.

3. When bandaging, start from the feet and gradually wrap upwards until you reach the required height. During the bandaging process, the two adjacent layers of elastic bandages should overlap by about two-thirds, otherwise it will not be easy to keep it flat after bandaging. It should be removed before going to bed every night.

4. When using an elastic bandage, you should observe the color of the limb skin and the swelling of the affected limb every day to observe its effect. Patients with varicose veins of the lower limbs who receive non-surgical treatment should use elastic bandages every day for a long time; patients with deep vein thrombosis must use elastic bandages for at least 3 months or even for life, whether during the period of restricted activity or after starting activities, in order to protect the function of the valves of the superficial veins and communicating veins and reduce or eliminate symptoms.

Elastic bandage is a special elastic bandage that can prevent and eliminate edema and varicose veins of the lower limbs. Improper use may also cause complications
