Tips to improve memory

Memory is extremely important to human beings, and it is even the main reason why human beings have advanced intelligence. The quality of memory is directly related to a person's learning ability, work ability and efficiency. Many people believe that memory is innate. Some people learn things quickly since childhood, and study and take exams much faster than others, while some people can't remember anything for a long time. In addition to some problems with brain development, this is also closely related to memory and thinking style.

I often hear people around me sigh, "I'm old, and my brain doesn't work as well as before." In fact, no matter what age you are, as long as you master the correct methods and develop good habits, improving your memory is not a problem!

Forgetting Curve

German psychologist H. Ebbinghaus found that forgetting begins immediately after learning and the process of forgetting is not uniform. The rate of forgetting is very fast at first, and then gradually slows down. He believed that "retention and forgetting are functions of time". He used meaningless syllables (syllables composed of several syllable letters, which can be read but have no content or meaning, that is, they are not words) as memory materials and used the economy method to calculate the amount of retention and forgetting. Based on his experimental results, he drew a curve to describe the forgetting process, which is the famous Ebbinghaus memory forgetting curve.

This curve tells us that forgetting in learning follows a regular pattern, that the process of forgetting is very fast, and that it starts fast and then slows down. If you observe the curve, you will find that if you don’t review the knowledge you have learned quickly after one day, only 25% of the original knowledge will remain. As time goes by, the rate of forgetting slows down and the amount of forgetting decreases. Therefore, after we study with the teacher in class, we must review regularly after class to refresh our memory.

Tips to improve memory

Focus

Poor memory is mainly due to lack of concentration on things, so you need to improve your concentration, don’t always be in a daze, choose a quieter environment or find an environment suitable for your memory according to your habits.

One small goal every day

Set a goal for yourself every day, or set a goal for yourself within a period of time. Memorize something regularly, such as starting with shorter idioms, poems, or English words. This method of practice will gradually improve your memory, but you must persist!

Seize the best time

From a scientific point of view, early morning and one hour after dinner are the best times for human memory, because in the early morning we have just woken up and the brain is in a full state; and after dinner, we replenish the body with sufficient energy, and memory will be greatly improved! However, depending on each person's situation, there will be some individual problems, which need to be determined based on your actual situation!

Understanding Memory

Understanding is the basis of memory. Only what is understood can be remembered for a long time. It is not easy to remember things just by rote memorization. If you can understand the important learning content well, it will be of great help to your memory.

Associative Memory

Connect what you want to remember with some things or events that interest you, and rearrange and combine them to quickly remember what you want to remember.

Category Memory

To give an intuitive example, let’s say one day I go to the supermarket to buy things, and what I want to buy are: apples, shampoo, cheese, milk, sugar, bananas, soap, and flour. So at this time, I can categorize the things I want to buy:

Fruit: apples, bananas

Dry foods: sugar, flour

Dairy products: milk, cheese

Toiletries: shampoo, soap

When we go to the supermarket and walk to the classification areas of different commodities, we will naturally think of the commodities we want to buy.

Eat brain-boosting foods appropriately

Proper consumption of some brain-boosting foods can also enhance our memory, such as the well-known walnuts. Other foods include: bananas, kelp, fish, milk, eggs, pumpkin, sunflower seeds, etc.
