How to educate children aged three to four

How to educate children aged three to four

Three to four years old is a special period in a child's growth, because at this time the child has his or her own independent consciousness, no longer completely listens to the advice of his or her parents, and sometimes does things according to his or her own wishes. Therefore, the education of children during this period is related to the formation of their future world view and outlook on life. So how should children aged three to four be educated so that they can develop a good sense of independence?

1. Set the rules

For children 4 and older, we can create a list of rules for their most troublesome behaviors, such as fighting with other children and speaking rudely. Parenting experts suggest that no more than five rules can be set for children aged 4 to 8.

2. Determine the consequences of non-compliance

Parents should clearly state the consequences if the rules are broken, such as not enjoying certain "benefits" for a short period of time. (Choose your child’s favorite activity as the “reward,” such as going out for a playdate, having friends over, or watching a DVD before bed.) Once your child breaks the rules, immediately implement the consequences of the behavior. At this time, there is no need for warnings, no bargaining, and no second chances. If little ones think there's room for negotiation, they're less likely to take your rules seriously.

3. Be prepared to reiterate the rules

An education expert who studies preschool children said: "At this age, parents may have to tell their children to do something a hundred or eighty times before they are obedient."

4. Rules should be fair and reasonable

We need to understand the corresponding characteristics of each age group in order to maintain reasonable expectations. If your 4-year-old son always has trouble sitting still at the dinner table, you should know that 6-year-olds are usually better at "sitting still" than they were at 4, and by the time they are 8, they will perform much better.

5. When faced with children's illegal behavior, parents should respond in a calm and prompt manner.

Some parents often just give empty orders and verbally say what they want to do, for example, "You are not allowed to do that!" or "I told you not to do it, and I keep my word!" But they never actually take action. Remember the old saying - actions speak louder than words.
