Can I apply ice to burns?

Burns are the most common phenomenon. Many people have been burned. You can apply ice after a burn. In fact, there are many ways to treat burns in life. Many people like to use toothpaste to treat burns after a burn. Toothpaste is effective in treating minor burns, but toothpaste cannot change the permeability of blood vessels, nor can it protect wounds well. It is best to use toothpaste with caution to prevent the growth of bacteria and cause infection.

How should we deal with burns correctly?

Rinse, remove, soak, cover and send to treat burns. Remember the "five-word formula"

1. Rush

Gently rinse or soak the burned area with clean, running cold water for about 10 to 30 minutes. Cold water can quickly dissipate heat to reduce damage to deep tissues. If the pain persists, the immersion time can be extended. If cold water is not available, harmless cold liquid can be used instead.

Ordinary tap water contains very little bacteria and can be used without worrying about possible infection. If there is no tap water, well water or river water can also be used.

2. Take off

After a good rinse and soak, carefully remove clothing in cold water. You can use scissors to cut the clothes, but never forcibly remove any clothing to avoid bursting the blisters. Because the blister epidermis plays a role in protecting the wound surface in the early stages of burns, it can relieve pain and reduce exudation.

Since the burn site and surrounding areas will swell after a burn, rings, watches, belts, shoes or other tight clothing should be removed before the injured area swells to prevent them from being unable to be removed after the limb swells, causing poor blood circulation and more serious injuries.

3. Soak

For those with obvious pain, soak in cold water for 10-30 minutes. At this time, the main function is to relieve pain, and flushing in the very early stages of burns can reduce the severity of burns, which is very important. However, for patients with extensive burns, children and the elderly, attention should be paid to the soaking time and water temperature to avoid excessive drop in body temperature.

4. Cover

Cover the wound with clean or sterile gauze or cotton cloth and secure it. This can reduce external contamination and irritation, help keep the wound clean and relieve pain.

In case of facial burns, it is advisable to adopt a sitting or semi-recumbent position, cut holes in the mouth, nose, eyes, ears and other parts with a clean and sterile cloth, and then cover the face.

5. Send

Transfer to a specialized burn hospital for further formal treatment.

These methods of treating burns are unreliable. Don't use them anymore.

1. Ice compress

Do not use ice to cool the wound, as the low temperature may worsen the already damaged skin wound.

2. Apply toothpaste

Do not apply toothpaste immediately after a burn, as toothpaste will make the heat from the skin have nowhere to dissipate, and it will only spread deep into the subcutaneous tissue, causing deeper damage.

3. Soy sauce treatment

Do not use soy sauce to treat wounds. First, soy sauce does not have any healing properties. Second, the color of soy sauce will affect the doctor's diagnosis.

4. Use burn medicine with unknown ingredients

It is best not to use burn medicine of unknown ingredients after a burn, because the medicine can be absorbed from the wound. If the application area is particularly large, it can easily cause poisoning after being absorbed by the body.
