Is it normal for a silk quilt to have a smell?

Silk quilts feel light and even cool on the body. So is it normal for silk quilts to have a smell?

It is normal for newly made silk quilts to have this smell, which is the smell of silkworm pupae. During the silk-making process, the cocoons must be boiled first. One-third of the silk is pores. When the cocoons are boiled, the smell of the silkworm pupae is stored in the pores of the silk. But it doesn't matter. After the silk quilt has been left for a while, the smell of silkworm pupae in the pores will slowly be replaced by odorless air, and the silk will no longer have any smell.

1. Sour or pungent smells are usually caused by quilts made of machine-made silk. The main reason is the addition of chemical substances such as floating agents during the processing of silk, and the musty smell caused by the silk quilt becoming damp and moldy during transportation.

Of course, in the process of peeling the cocoons, silkworm pupa debris is unavoidable, so sometimes, it smells like the stench of silkworm pupae. 3. Manufacturers use edible citric acid to rinse silk (not bleaching powder), so the smell of newly made silk will be stronger than that of silk cleaned with bleaching powder. But consuming citric acid is harmless to the body and keeps the green color of silk.

How to remove the smell:

Placing the silk quilt in a ventilated place and letting it blow is a very effective method. But the effect will be better if it is dried in the sun, because the increased temperature will accelerate the replacement of air in the pores. The way to remove odor is to dry it in a ventilated place. The odor will evaporate quickly and gradually disappear.

To ensure the hygienic use and good fluffiness of the silk quilt, please dry it in the sun in a well-ventilated place, but avoid exposing it to the scorching sun, so as to extend the service life of the silk quilt and keep it soft and comfortable.

When drying, gently pat the quilt with your hands to make it fluffy, which will achieve better results.

Note: Natural silk that has not been treated with any chemicals has a natural smell of silkworms themselves. Inferior quality silk has silicone oil and softener added to increase its smoothness. Silk with an oily or musty smell is of inferior quality. Silk that smells oily or musty is of inferior quality.
