1. The main sources of indoor formaldehyde:

There are many sources of indoor formaldehyde, but the most important source is boards that use adhesives (various particle boards, high-density fiberboards, blockboards, plywood, artificial boards, etc.). The urea-formaldehyde resin used in the boards ages and decomposes under certain temperature and humidity conditions to produce formaldehyde and release it into the air.

2. Indoor formaldehyde concentration:

Various indoor pollution sources continuously release formaldehyde. Under closed conditions, when the formaldehyde concentration rises to a certain level, it will in turn inhibit further release from the release source. At this time, a dynamic equilibrium is reached and the formaldehyde concentration no longer changes. What we refer to as the indoor formaldehyde concentration is the equilibrium concentration under this state.

3. Factors affecting indoor formaldehyde concentration include:

1. Temperature

This is related to the fact that the formaldehyde emission from artificial boards increases with rising temperature, and the increase is particularly significant above 25°C. In addition, literature shows that if the temperature increases by 5℃-6℃, the formaldehyde concentration in the gas phase can increase by 100%.

2. Humidity

Indoor formaldehyde concentration is positively correlated with humidity. The higher the humidity, the higher the formaldehyde concentration.

Because increased humidity will accelerate the aging of urea-formaldehyde resin in the board, causing an increase in formaldehyde concentration. In addition, literature shows that when the relative humidity increases from 30% to 70%, the formaldehyde concentration will also increase by 40%.

3. There is a negative correlation between indoor wind speed and indoor air formaldehyde concentration. The higher the wind speed, the lower the formaldehyde concentration.

4. The service life of pollutants.

The longer the artificial wood board is placed, the smaller the formaldehyde emission will be. However, after it is reduced to a certain level, the formaldehyde emission will reach equilibrium, and the board will release formaldehyde into the surrounding environment in a stable state.

The formaldehyde release cycle is long: the adhesive exists inside the artificial board and continuously decomposes and releases formaldehyde over a period of 3-15 years.

5. Quality of the pollution source itself

a. Adhesive quality: The worse the quality of the adhesive used in the manufacturing process, the greater the release.

The amount of formaldehyde released by phenol-formaldehyde resin during aging and decomposition is less than that of urea-formaldehyde resin.

b. Manufacturing process: The formaldehyde emission from the surface of artificial wood boards is significantly reduced after sealing treatment.

Densely perforated artificial boards will cause large amounts of formaldehyde to be released.

Poor quality laminate flooring and a large amount of custom-made panel furniture can also cause increased indoor formaldehyde concentrations.

Therefore, the extensive use of adhesives and artificial boards will cause serious excess of formaldehyde in indoor areas.
