Symptoms of pneumonia in turtle hatchlings

Turtle seedlings refer to the young turtles. Small turtles are prone to some diseases. The most common disease is pneumonia. The mortality rate of this pneumonia is relatively high because it can easily cause a variety of symptoms. For users who raise turtles, they must prevent pneumonia in small turtles in time and should treat them in time. Let us understand the symptoms of pneumonia in turtle seedlings.

Symptoms of pneumonia in turtle hatchlings

A. The most "famous" symptom of pneumonia is the turtle breathing with its mouth open. Since the turtle's mouth will open and close slightly in the water, a nervous turtle may mistake this normal phenomenon for pneumonia. Turtles also yawn. As long as they do not breathe frequently with their mouths open and do not make explosive sounds when breathing, they do not have pneumonia.

B. There is another one that appears in Brazil. Since almost all the Brazil on the market have become wild, aggressive individuals are rare. When a wild Brazilian snapper is threatened, it will open its mouth and make a whistling sound. Because it is relatively "rare", it may be mistaken for pneumonia (I am depressed. I have been visiting the market for a long time but haven't seen any aggressive Brazilian snappers. How can someone buy them on the roadside...). In fact, the hawksbill and alligator turtles also have this temper, but turtle lovers who raise these two types of turtles should already know this. When a turtle takes a "deep breath", its neck will bulge like a frog. In fact, this is a normal phenomenon and there is no need to worry about it. The turtle's nodding is also a sign of breathing, so there's no need to worry about it. Some information says that turtles cannot leave water when treating pneumonia. In fact, this is also a misunderstanding, which may be the result of false information.

C. Turtles with pneumonia will leave the water. In fact, this is also a way for them to protect themselves, because they can easily choke and drown in the water. I have thought about this issue of misunderstanding for a long time (hence the delay in finishing the manuscript...), and I also specially consulted someone (a diving expert, I searched for him for 2 days. It is said that this person has a bad habit of not inviting guests for meals, so he dives all year round to avoid being hunted by his enemies). When a turtle with pneumonia opens its mouth to breathe, it makes a "hoarse" sound, which makes people mistakenly believe that it is having difficulty breathing due to the dry environment, and thus there is the misunderstanding that "turtles with pneumonia cannot leave water." In fact, the reason why turtles make strange noises when they have pneumonia is similar to the reason why people cannot pronounce words clearly when they have pneumonia - a large amount of pus accumulates in the respiratory tract, and gas cannot flow in and out smoothly, so strange noises are made. It is also a misunderstanding that patients with pneumonia cannot leave water (it can even kill them). Unfortunately, I was also infected and have been buried in this misunderstanding. I only realized it recently and I am really ashamed.

Diagnosis of Pneumonia in Tortoises:

In the early stages of pneumonia, the turtle will have a fever, difficulty breathing, and sometimes wheezing. Its eyes will be dull and it will have tears, a runny nose, or nasal blisters. In severe cases, scabs will form on the nostrils and the eye circles will turn white. The turtle will gradually become thin, its head will retract, and it will stop eating. If the condition continues to deteriorate, it may develop lung abscesses, gangrene, and eventually suffocate to death.

Prevention of Pneumonia in Tortoises:

The most important thing to prevent pneumonia in turtles is to prevent colds. Ensure that the temperature in the turtle house is constant and the temperature difference does not change much. Pay attention to ventilation in summer.

When the ambient temperature drops suddenly, increase the temperature in time. When changing water, the water temperature should be kept consistent before and after, and the maximum temperature difference should be controlled within 2°C.
